Force XP Start Menu Style

Hi ppl, quick question. I am setting up a new network, and I cant for the life of me force the XP stations Start Menu to the XP style. When a user logs on they get the classic.

 

I have set the gpo to use the luna theme.

 

I know I'm missing something simlpe, but what?

You need to go to User Config > Admin Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar

 

There is a policy here called "Force Classic Start Menu" It should be Not Configured or set to Disabled so you can use the new XP Start Menu. Personally I prefer Classic anyday

recreated default user profile. No gpos being set.

 

If i logon without gpos being applied and change the settings by right clicking the start menu. all works fine. If i then delete profile from server. Settings go back to classic menu.

Are the roaming profiles you've specified mandatory?

 

Look for file called NTUSER -

 

NTUSER.DAT enables the user to save information to their profile. Renaming it to NTUSER.MAN essentially makes the profile read-only, no matter what change(s) the user makes.

Nope use roaming profiles. Cached copies are deleted at logoff.

 

The problem is from the initial profile creation.

The GP should be able to overide it I'm sure - just check the relevent secctions which are being applied to the users.

 

At least, mine will - right down to what theme you want.

Yeh W2K3 / XP

 

The funny thing is it is set up the same as 3 other networks I look after and they all work fine.

 

Everything else from the GPO works a treat. Just the Start Menu Style defaults to classic rather then XP. It usually the other way round.

 

I'm stumped.

What's wrong with classic anyway? It's loads quicker & doesn't look like teletubbyland

Personal Pref. Find it works better for primary aged children.

If you logon to the workstation with a user account that shows the fault, then click Start->Run-> Type "MMC", click File->Add/Remove Snap-In, Click Add... -> Select Resultant Set of Policy and then click Add, Click Next until the wizard is complete, Click finish, then close then Ok.

 

Now if your using Windows XP SP2 you'll have to right click on the new item that is listed in the console and select Generate RSOP Data to create the data whereas Pre SP2 it will already be generated at this point

 

Navigate to User Config > Admin Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar to see what policy settings have been applied.

 

If the Force Class Start menu has been set by a policy (possibly a long since forgotten policy!) it will be shown here. If its not listed there isn't a policy applied for this. Its probably best to set a policy rather than accept the 'default' setting as this may be different for each workstation, at least in theory.

Just to chip in;

 

I've actually got this "problem" as well, I made a new madatory profile the other day, and set the start menu and taskbar to the XP style. When i uploaded the profile and applied it to a user it went back to the classic style.

 

didnt bother to look into why as I'm not really bothered.

We have a compromise with our policy, we have binned Teletubby land (much to the annoyance of the ikkle children) and have the XP style start menu (IE the 2 panes etc.) but have got NT colour scheme - so they greys etc... So its a happy compromise. If you are a good member of staff you can change yours back to teletubby land. I had at my last place the full XP works, but I think i binned Teletubby land, and replaced it with Azul

Have you tried disabling policy inheritance on the OU in question? I'm wondering if its some conflicting policies causing the problem? Generally speaking machine policies override user policies.

 

If this makes no difference - for experimental purposes create a new OU, don't edit any policies, add a test user and see what happens.
