Hello All, Due to a staff restructure at our place we are down two member of staff, as a result I have inherited a decrepid exchange 2000 server to look after. Before I write the rest of this message I will explain that I have no previous experience of MS Exchange and am making things up as I go along. Yesterday afternoon outlook 2003 dropped connections to exchange and upon restarting could not connect. I found this problem to be insufficient space on the drive storing the Information Store and databases, the drive is a 10GB drive so hardly surprising . As a workaround I put an IDE drive into the server and used System manager to move the locations of the information store and databases. All seemed well at around 7:30pm last night, exchange was even running noticably faster. However when I arrived to work this morning, the server had clearly rebooted and the mouse pointer had frozen . Restarting the server has brought it back online for now. I know its a real crystal ball question, but does anyone have any idea what may have caused this or be able to give me some pointers on how I can run some diagnostics to try and find the problem. There didnt seem to be any relevent entries in any of the event logs before the crash (around 1:45am) Thanks for reading (if you did) Mathew

Well to my relief the head has decided to not run it during today and tommorrows OFSTED inspections. That should give me time to apply the latest patch from RM and hopefully it may resolve some of my issues.

We also did 120 kids last year with very few problems, unfortuantely more and more roles have been piled onto this server due to lack of funding.

Just running very slow and having an impact on the rest of the network. To be honest its just the server thats not up to it, it has a Promise Fastrack Software assisted RAID (fake raid, whatever) and the disks only just manage the task of serving files during the peak hours. During the tests today the % IDLE time on the logical disk counter was at 0% for almost 5 mins. Im hoping that once i have this poweredge up and running and all of the student homefolders moved accross things will be a lot better.

Hi All, Just to let you know my summative test sessions are going really badly as expected. We are running 90 users concurrently on a domain controller that happens to be the student fileserver serving 700 workstations. Great thing is I have a brand new dell poweredge 2950 sat in a cabinet doing nothing, I intended it to be the new fileserver which would massively releive pressure from the KS3 Testing server. Unfortunately i've not had time to set up the poweredge yet because i've been concentrating on rolling out the DPS clients. We are being ofsted inspected tommorrow, and yes we have two test sessions running tommorrow! Isnt that the most wonderful idea! ./ Rant over

I just find that Linux can handle long file names, filenames with special characters in a lot better than what windows can. I have plenty of spare PC's to boot into knoppix, so dont find that a problem.

I would use a linux boot cd to do this from knoppix for example. 1. create a mount point and mount your home shares dir. mkdir /mnt/homeshares mount -t cifs //fileserver/yoursharename /mnt/homeshares -o username=administrator 2. Using the find command and rm command find /mnt/homeshares -name "RECYCLER" -exec rm -rf {} \; This would remove all recycler folders from folders under yoursharename.

Thanks Guys, i've spec'd up a pretty decent poweredge 2900 for just sort of £3000, half the desirable capacity but its still well enough. With regards to NEC, i have an NEC Express 5800/120Eg which they told us had a hardware RAID. Its actually got a promise "hardware assisted" RAID controller on board. Matt

Hi All, I wonder if you can help me, the ICT Coordinator here has a meeting with the head tonight to discuss budgeting for hardware for the curriculum network. She has asked me to provide details for her to take to him. I've managed to find some decent workstations and all of the switches I will need but its a long time since I’ve had to buy server hardware. Basically I am looking for a new fileserver, preferably rack mounted to run 2003 R2 to start with. I’m looking for something with decent fast disks. The fileserver is going to need to have at least 600GB for storing files and could be accessed by up to 700 workstations. Bad news is, I’m looking at £3000 for the server.. Also, I’ve never installed a rack server before, do they just go into standard cabinets? (Space permitting) Thanks for any help in advance. Matt

I have the 2007 Pupil Familiarisation Materials and the 2007 Test Scheduling but nothing else, I had a leaflet the other day telling me the practice should be available in Mid January. I'm really interested in this too, pupils here have made the discovery that they can share access to their "games" folders. There tends not to be many games on our network, as I block executables from home folders and use Dansguardian to stop them downloading any. However since they need to use swf files, kids have just started renaming the games button1.swf etc and are becoming pretty difficult to search and destroy. If i do find a kid who has changed permissions, all i can do at the moment is change them back and pass them onto the teachers (who do nothing)

nah $username$ is supposed to be a token specifically for the DS Commands, %username% would just give it the username of the currently logged on user (the person who runs the script). Cheers

Hi, I've noticed a few music tracks appearing in the local "all users" folder on some workstations. This isnt a major problem for me, but its one of those i dont have a great deal of time to look into. Music files are banned from homefolders using spaceguard SRM (i love it) Anyone had a similar thing?

@NORPHY - Yes, i am booting the OS from the RAID, i cant for the life in me remember why I decided to to this, I have ample space on the server and could have split the OS into a different physical disk. I feel pretty dumb for doing this, but as you say its a big job to fix. The server seems to have gotten worse recenty. Its been runnig for about 8 months now. @Geoff - Thanks, i'll take a look at those performance counters soon, i didnt mention though that the servers performance seems nearly the same when the network is quiet. I was thinking of trying to run diskeeper on it as well, even though im unclear of the benefits of running it on a raid5, and the fact that it will wipe out my shadow copies. Mathew

Hello All The fileserver responsible for my student home shares is running really slow for reasons unknown, i wonder if anyone has any ideas that may help me. Its a 2003 server running RAID 5 on a promise SATA controller. Other Specs; Xeon 2.8 1GB RAM The server also runs as a domain controller and has the KS3 Pilot server running on it (sorry) Its epecially slow when listing the home directorys folder, which has around 1900 folders in it. Shares are done induvidually i.e. \\fileserver\username$ and a volume shadow copy is taken twice a day. Looking at the perfmon console, there are no obvious indicators of a problem, availiable memory seems ok and average disk queue length is below the amount of spindles in the raid. Im getting massive pressure from a particular member of staff at work which is not really helping, I dont seem to have much uninterrupted time to look into the fault and its causing me a lot of stress at the moment. Yes, the kids are able to change their home pages, but only within their own profiles. As long as you use a GP to set the home page and delete cached copies of roaming profiles you will be ok.

Hello All, I cant change the desktop wallpaper on any of the workstations in the domain, you can get into properties but all options relating to wallpaper and the screensaver are greyed out. After a bit of googling I found that most people are suggesting spyware is the cause, but i can rule this out in my case as I've reghosted the machine with a known good image. I've also moved my test workstation into a new OU with no policy applied and blocked policy inheritance, but still no luck. Doesnt seem to be user related either as i've tried administrator as well as a freshly created domain admin account. Any ideas? Matt
