I restored a laptop this week back to factory using it's restore disk. It loaded pretty clean no crudware at all. it's a core2 ASUS F5. OK fresh restore no apps....It's slow, I mean like click wait...wait...wait.. there it is..

 

This thing is awful, I'd been pissed if I got it new like this! Anyhow had to upgrade it to SP1 (as nothing will work otherwise) I started at 10AM it's now nearly 14:00 and it just made it to Stage 1 of 3 12% a fair bit higher than the 1 hour guesstimate.

 

OH.. BTW after initial restore it was so painful to use I HAD to fetch extra ram from my supply to take it too 2gigs or it was impossible... I put it just so I could update it faster. (glad that worked)

That sounds ridiculously slow for the spec... are you sure the HDD isn't fritzed?

Have to agree that its the hard drive on the way out. Failing that, could be a thermal or power issue causing the CPU to be very heavily throttled.

I finally read a report on Vista and laptops... they just don't match. I upgraded some teacher's personal Vista with 2 Gb and dual core to Win 7 Pro. That poor thing could not get out of it's own mouse's way.. nothing I tried did anything. I then read a report on Vista and laptops. I had a early dual core laptop at home I upgraded to Win 7 as it just crawled all the time and the HD light would always be blinking. BINGO.. Did Win 7 fix it ! I then tried it on this teacher's laptop, again.. it was like night an day. And I did an upgrade.. not a scratch install. Amazing how bad Vista was.

I also upgrade my home PC Vista Pro to Win 7, could not believe it was the same machine. I would have not replaced it, had not it been I picked up a AMD x6 MB for dirt cheap.

Man I feel your pain!! Well in my time i have restored many vista laptops, and ran into the same issue as that you were having with the very slow updates and service pack installs, the laptop that I was dealing had good spec core 2 duo with 4gb of RAM. And I kept saying to myself it can’t be the specs that are the issue, after time I had it so I shut down the laptop and opened up the laptop and found that the laptop had a 5400rmp hard drive installed, so upgraded it to a new 7200rmp 500gb hard drive and it worked like a charm was 2x faster at installing updated and other tasks. !!!

I have an old HP laptop - Intel Centrino - that had Vista on - was exceptional sluggish. Upgraded to Win 7 and much faster. Recently put an SSD in it and it beats a lot of modern Win 7 machines for boot up. Odd thing is I just had to do a Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade on 15 Windows 8 home machines and I managed to get 3 of them to update in 6 hours total each... Back to the old Vista days maybe?
