Sharepoint 2007 & Extranet

Hi

 

The people who knew sharepoint left years ago, since then we have been adding the odd link, changing room bookings etc. But have all been too scared to do much in case we break it as we do NOT have the knowledge required to fix it. To be honest it is not widely used but there is some key information still there that needs to stay and requires updating.

 

So it has to stay in some form or other.

 

I want to upgrade the OS (from 2003 to either 2012), virtualise the server, and feel more comfortable about how it is put together.

 

The first stage is to remove old data - we really do not need to know who had booked room 5, in period 2, on the 22nd Jan 2008!

 

The most urgent question is what is the file called EXTRANET?

Why is it 160GB - yup GB?

How do I shrink it?

 

Is Extranet the external access to the website as this is now only available internally?

What would happen if I rename it?

If it all goes horribly wrong can I just rename it back and it will fix itself?

Why was it last updated on the 23rd March, when I spent most of yesterday (27th March) removing old photos and room bookings?

Is there something like WinDirStat I can use on a website to find out what is taking up all the space?

Is the fact that this file is in a directory called 'Farm Backups' mean it is a backup and can be deleted?

 

Thank you for any help and please can any replies understand that I know nothing about Sharepoint.

What's the file extension on this extranet file?

 

Do you have access to the central admin site? if so - you can find out how much storage space is being used there. I'll need to check how you do this in 2007, I'm running 2010.

Extranet has no file extension - no idea why (& yes I have turned on view file extensions).

 

I have access to everything - OK with everything else just Sharepoint is a black art.

Ok - in that case open up Central Admin - and have a look under "Application Management" for a link called "Manage content databases" - see if "EXTRANET" is listed there...

Under Content Databases only ExtranetS is listed - my file in the singular Extranet, this is the plural.

How odd. What's the last modified date on the singular extranet file? has it been modified recently?

I have changes to the website both today & yesterday. The file is saying last modified on the 23rd

It's not a database backup file with no extension by any chance is it? (assuming SQL is on the same server) Given that the 23rd is a Sunday... I wonder if that's the case? Have you checked in SQL to see if there are any maintenance routines or scheduled backups?

Nothing that I can see - found a database called Extranets and a Mdf file though

Well in that case - back it up and then try to delete it (out of hours... of course) that'll soon tell you if it's in use!
