MattDLEA Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Had a quick google about and found that its either a password error or a connect.ini error. Our set up is Sims installed on one computer PC. Then we have 4 other computers connecting to it. Since yesterday dinnertime noone can connect to SIMS, as far as i can tell nothing has been done to either the installed computer or the others that connect to it. As I'm not responsible for SIMS I dont want to do anything that may make it worse. Just wondered what your trouble shooting would be on this? Solution: Browse to C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .Net and ope the file connect.ini under the field “ServerName=” enter the servername of your sims server, backslash, sims sql instance for example “ServerName=SIMSSERVER\SIMS2008″ would that need doing on all computers? #
nikaso Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Ahh, the old Error 0. Connect.ini is a problem but you will also see the issue if there is a loss of network connectivity. We have a member of staff who forgets to turn their wireless on sometimes and gets the error 0 code. I'm assuming the PC you have it installed on is the SIMS server? We have our system set up to look at a single shared connect.ini file on the server but in your case it sounds as though you might need to change it on each PC.
localzuk Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 It all depends on what your connect.ini file has in it at the moment. Can you post it here?
Jawloms Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Might a Windows Update have turned the firewall on?
starthms Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Might a Windows Update have turned the firewall on? Also see if you had a antivirus update, can block SIMS if not on the trusted programs list
MattDLEA Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 right on the server pc in C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .Net \conect [sIMSConnection] ServerName=of2-sims\sims2008 DatabaseName=SIMS ServerType=SIMSSQL However in C:SIMS\conect i have [sIMSConnection] ServerName=OF2-SIMS\SIMS2008 DatabaseName=sims on the client pc's C:\Programfiles\Sims\Sims .net [simsconection] Redirect=L:\SIMS L is the shared drive on the server pc which is this file However in C:SIMS\conect i have [sIMSConnection] ServerName=OF2-SIMS\SIMS2008 DatabaseName=sims Thanks for your help. SIMS support says its our problem not theirs
localzuk Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 That looks fine to me. I would say the issue will be something like a firewall issue then.
MrMat Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Agree with the above. Potential for the SQL service to have been stopped? This would also cause the same error. Have a look at the Local Services on the machine running the SIMS database, check that the service called SQL Server (OF2-SIMS) is running.
starthms Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Localzuk i think is right, other thing you can do is copy the connect ini from C drive and paste it over the Clients PC one. We had problems with the connect ini with the redirect and firewalls. Copy the clients connect ini and put it some where safe just in case you need to put it back.
MattDLEA Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) Right to add more to this I have turned of AV temporarily and we have no firewall on and still nothing. Been to local services and SQL Server (OF2-SIM) is set to automatic but looking at it its not running and when I click start I get [ATTACH=CONFIG]23417[/ATTACH] Any ideas how to get this restarted? Edited March 18, 2014 by MattDLEA
MrMat Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Cannot open the attachment unfortunately, it says 'Invalid Attachment Specified'. I presume it's an error message, what does it say?
matt40k Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Check Event Viewer for more info, failing that the errorlog in the SQL logs folder. Also worth checking Event viewer to see if Windows has recorded any bad blocks - ie duff hdd. Check the mdf\ldf are still present as well. I know I'd had it before when someone CUT the databases rather than COPY when they did a backup.
MattDLEA Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 windows could not start the SQL Server ..... error code 3417
sparkeh Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) windows could not start the SQL Server ..... error code 3417 Check that the account that is running the SQL service has permission to access the folder containing the db. Or could be a problem with the db? :S Edited March 18, 2014 by sparkeh
MrMat Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 A very quick Google points to a permissions issue between the account running the SQL Server (Network Service etc) and the Data Folder where the actual database is held. Suggested resolution: Check what account is running the SQL service (In local services it will say in the right hand column next to the SQL service) Browse to the location of your SQL server installation. Will be in Program Files or Program Files (x86), Microsoft SQL Server, MSSQL.10.OF2-SIM, MSSQL then right click the Data folder, Properties, Security then make sure the account running SQL (i.e. local Service etc) has Full Control of this folder. localzuk Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 As far as I can tell, this can be a permissions issue - does the account that the SQL service runs as have permissions to the folder where the database file is stored? Also, make sure you've not got drive compression enabled on the drive as this stops SQL working.
MattDLEA Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 Cheers, Support Call think that MSSQL has badgered up. This is in a error log 2014-03-18 11:04:17.49 spid7s Starting up database 'master'. 2014-03-18 11:04:17.56 spid7s WARNING: did not see LOP_CKPT_END. 2014-03-18 11:04:17.56 spid7s Error: 3414, Severity: 21, State: 2. 2014-03-18 11:04:17.56 spid7s An error occurred during recovery, preventing the database 'master' (database ID 1) from restarting. Diagnose the recovery errors and fix them, or restore from a known good backup. If errors are not corrected or expected, contact Technical Support. 2014-03-18 11:04:17.56 spid7s Cannot recover the master database. SQL Server is unable to run. Restore master from a full backup, repair it, or rebuild it. For more information about how to rebuild the master database, see SQL Server Books Online. For some reason now they cant remote into us with logmein123 *sigh* Dunno what you mean about HDD as the computer is working
matt40k Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 So basically the MASTER database that SQL uses for it's meta data like SQL login\password is got corrupted. You know have to reinstall SQL. I would seriously be looking into Event Viewer for errors (I think it's the SYSTEM logs) for bad blocks, this basically means the hdd has problems and needs replacing. The MASTER database doesn't get corrupted for no reason, OK it could be you had a power failure, it could be the antivirus, but it could be a hdd is on it's way out. It's worth doing now as it's going to get worse if it is bad blocks and you don't want to reinstall SQL only for it to get worse then the whole drive fails. Might be worth checking your backups.

MattDLEA Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 Thanks for the replies. Their tech support came out and reinstalled SIMS, they would have had to anyways as they don't trust us with the password. Not tried that zag though I have passed it on to out NGFL to unblock them. I also got Have you tried holding down Ctrl + Alt + Shift before clicking the Connect to Technician button? Apparently this “forces the session into a relayed connection and resolves issues in peer to peer connections such as NAT not working properly on both ends” Also has this Note: “The customer should keep the Ctrl + Alt + Shift keys held down until a connection is formed” Then goes on to say: “If the connection continues to fail or an Invalid certificate message appears, there may be a security policy on the customer’s network preventing the connection. UDP communication and ActiveX must be allowed for Rescue connections to take place. Important: Please also ensure the date and time are correct on the customer’s computer" - - - Updated - - - Thanks for the replies.
