Yeo695 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 If you could only take 10 programs with you to to clean up a few computers you know are out of date and are overflowing with Junkware and Adware with the possibility of Malware? They don't have to be free but all of mine are and marked accordingly. I found that these 10 can pull just about any computer out of a shit storm. 1. CCleaner (Free) 2. ComboFix (Free) 3. Junk Ware Removal Tool - JRT (Free) 4. Malwarebytes (Free) 5. rkill (Free) 6. Kaspersky TDSKiller tool (Free) 7. Microsoft Security Essentials (Free) 8. Super Anti Spyware (Free) 9. Garies Utilities (Free) 10. ADWCleaner (Free) 1
localzuk Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 For work? DBAN SCCM For outside work? Avast Adaware Spybot S&D And if those fail DBAN Windows Install Media 1
Bradlys Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Nothing. I'm so good I can remove viruses by hand 1
speckytecky Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Good posting @Yeo695 However, I don't think all your 'free' are actually free for use in Education etc. Certainly MalwareBytes needs paying for if used in a school, I have a feeling that CC Cleaner falls into the same category as I believe so does MS Security Essentials.
Yeo695 Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Nothing. I'm so good I can remove viruses by hand It's possible but to time consuming and to much risk for me.
Yeo695 Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) Good posting @Yeo695 However, I don't think all your 'free' are actually free for use in Education etc. Certainly MalwareBytes needs paying for if used in a school, I have a feeling that CC Cleaner falls into the same category as I believe so does MS Security Essentials. @speckytecky of course there are paid versions except for a few like (as far as I know) Rkill, TDS, CF, JRT and MSE but the free versions that I listed still get the job done just without the bells and whistles. I actually use Malwarebytes free for removing viruses on client machines but at home I use the pro version. They both detect and remove viruses/malware but the only difference is the pro version automatically and actively removes malware and monitors incoming and outgoing data. visioN Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I think what he means is the free versions are not allowed to be used in a commercial enviroment. They are free for home users only. 1
visioN Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 The use of either Malwarebytes Free or PRO in any business, government, educational or non-profit environment is against Malwarebytes policy. elsiegee40 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Outside school 1. Malwarebytes (free) 2. Emisoft Emergency Kit (free) 3. Microsoft Safety Scanner (free) Full scans with those 3 in that order get most things.
Yeo695 Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Good find, but I originally intended for home/family/friends use not so much school. Mostly why I put it in general. speckytecky Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Thanks @visioN That's not only what I mean - I thought it's what I said! mac_shinobi Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 1. Linux 2. OSX and iOS 3. For Windows - Avast! 1) Linux live disc of some description? 2) MS Dart bootable environment with an av plug in ? 3) Attached externally to a computer with a decent and up to date av running regardless of os ie linux / mac os / windows etc 4) Safe mode with networking to try and update the av / anti malware and remove the malware whether viruses or whatever
elsiegee40 Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Backup crucial data and re image ?? At school, the data should be backed up anyway and a new image is my tool of choice too 1

But, I was more taking "the best offense is a a good defence" approach. The best solution to a malware problem is to never have one and Linux, iOS, and OSX in that order are the best defence on that front at the moment. 2
abillybob Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Immunet are good, we use them with our filecloud solution as they intergrate very well together! But we use Sophos around the school as it's cheap for us due to county. For personal use the only AV I ever use is MSE and shove ccleaner on to clean up registry and Temporary files every month

ass17 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I use dr web cure IT and kaspersky removal (ISO) and sometimes Norman malware cleaner

Ancient Linux servers: The blighted slum houses of the Internet « Ars Technica With 4.4% of the world share of the browser market methinks IE6 and all of the poorly maintained Windows XP boxes in the wild is the far bigger risk. Particularly with XP about to meet its zero-day doom all the while over 95% of the worlds ATMs and (and many banks) are still running XP. http://www.modern.ie/ie6countdown
