A technicians guide Book to windows 7?

Hi there

 

I am pretty new to the IT world and currently working as an ICT Technician in education (i.e. in the deep end) can anyone recommend a windows 7 book/videos that would help me from a technicians viewpoint?

Windows 7 for Dummies is a good starting point - that will give you the basics.

Do you have experience with XP and Vista?

 

Most things are similar but at the same time they are not. At least thats what I think.

 

What are you trying to learn? As you could probably google everything you need to know without having to get a book.

other specific area's worth spending some time on are imo deployment tools (windows AIK MDT etc) how profiles work printer Queue options/setup

but it all depends on what you are responsible for.

Windows Administrator book for a jump start intro.

Windows 7 resource kit, for *understanding* what the stuff in the admin book is doing

Windows internals sixth edition part 1 and part 2 to get deep knowledge, and learn debugging tricks that are the secret weapon of System Administrators.

Many thanks to those that have answered so far I am responsible for the general troubleshooting and maintenance of windows 7 based machines, the deployment of software & rebuilding and upgrading machines. Its a steep learning curve to say the least but learnt more in the last six weeks than I knew before!

Also, don't be afraid to ask questions here - we all have to learn and most people can remember what its like when you're starting out. You'll probably find at least one EduGeek who has come across the same problem as you and will be able to help solve it using real world experience.

Thanks this seems a really good resource with a fairly huge community. It is a bit of a shock to the system at the moment with so much information to take on, I am fairly technically minded but from the first six weeks working here I'm finding i don't think with an IT mindset at the moment i.e from the ground up looking at simple solutions first, check the connections, check the wireless button isn't turned off etc. I guess I cant expect to know everything coming in from the cold so to speak, my background is in graphic design so fairly good with software but not with the hardware OS and issues associated with a network!
