View students PC desktops similar to CCTV security system?

Hello,

 

We just installed 30 new PCs in a PC lab at an elementary school.

 

The new principal of the school told us he remembers a s/w at his old school where a teacher could view all the active desktops/screens remotely on the teachers PC - sort of like a CCTV system where you have small tiled screens - and then maximize them if needed.

 

Does such a system exist? Thank you.

We use RM Tutor 5 within our establishment, although there are alternatives like Net Control 2, or Net Support School.

Abtutor paid for works well, VNC free but a bit harder to manage and use, I had a look at Impero and this looked good as well again paid for.

Italc is another - iTALC supports many platforms seamlessly.

We use NetSupport School for this and have done for over 10 years (although we initially used the rebranded version as part of RangerSuite).

I would always recommend ABTutor Control due to the licensing.

 

£200 gets you unlimited PCs you can "view" and one admin license to look at them all. Another £200 gets you a second "viewer".

 

I've got two one for my laptop, and one for my desktop (VPN on to from home).

 

I've also used it across two schools separated by miles for a couple of years. As long as you can access that IP range you can view the PCs on a completely different network.

If its just viewing you want and no interaction at all, then Lanschool do a "Lite" version of their software, which basically just views the screens of every PC its installed, its good for libraries and IT rooms where there is a dedicated staff machine.

Another vote for Impero, we use it and it's a great tool that both technicians and teachers can easily use. I even use it to push out quick updates every now and then to computers suite.

We used to use Impero at our site for a long time, its a good product and offers a lot more than just basic remote control, it was too expensive for us to renew here so a decision was made to stop using it.

 

At the moment we dont tend to remote view machines (there were only two of us in IT department that used this software across the school) now we use Dameware Mini Remote Control to connect into machines internally to work, you can configure this though to silently connect to peoples PCs also if you want to use it connect to a student workstation and monitor.

Could also try Skip VNC Console with VNC which is free and looks like a good way of managing VNC through a console although I haven't used, but looks good, Skeep VNC Console | Free System Administration software downloads at SourceForge.net found this on another thread on Edugeek and looks interesting.

Be carefull of certain VNC applications, their use doesn't cover within schools, I think RealVNC is one.

 

We used LanSchool at last place, could deploy via MSI and control via GPO
