Internet problem

I have got a old dell laptop that i have been asked to look at because it will not connect to the internet. I opened up Command Prompt to see if i was getting a outside connection, so i pinged BBC - Homepage and got a reply. Sounds odd to me. I then looked in internet options and clicked on connections tab, on the LAN settings it has got nothing ticked but all input boxes are white like they are active. (See image)

 

If i then Click on the "Automatically Detect settings" tick box and tick then untick the proxy server box it looks like it should be. With everything grayed out other then "Automatically detect Settings" But when i go to click on the OK button it doesn't do anything. Almost like it have got a setting wrong but its the same as every other computer have i. (See Image)

 

Has anyone seen this before? Hope this makes sense.

Just tried it with Firefox and that does not work either.

Just installed IE9 from windows updates and it wont even load up. It starts to load and gives me the internet explorer window but the page stays white for about 5 seconds and then just closes.

put 8.8.8.8 in the browser and see what happens.

 

what happens if you ( on the command line ) do

 

c:\telnet smtp.bt.net 25

I just opened up Internet Explorer (64-bit) from the start menu and its working but the 32-bit one doesnt work. I dont understand this.

At a guess, if you go to Programs and Features and select "Turn Windows features on or off" you get a blank list.

 

I've seen similar behaviour to this with a workstation, I believe it can be fixed but was not time-efficient to trace. I reimaged the machine in the end.

Yeah couldn't see anything in Windows Features.

 

This is a personal laptop of a member of Staff so can just reimage it.

at a long shot you could try resetting the TCP/IP stack open cmd and type netsh winsock reset. I have seen this work on various issues.

I think it's HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

In the registry if you right click on the Internet Settings Directory and go to permissions, might be worth while checking against a working machine what the permissions are meant to be and ensure that the permissions are set correctly

 

Wondering if the system or relevant groups have the wrong persmissions and when you try and alter the proxy settings via GPO or manually etc it may be sending the relevant commands to update this registry key however due to the permissions being wrong it may be failing to actually change the relevant sub registry keys within the Internet Settings directory

 

Just wondering, are there any events with the date and time of when you try to manually change the proxy settings within event viewer ( so if you try and manually change the proxy settings and then go into event viewer to see if there are any error messages )

 

Control Panel --> Administrative tools --> Event Viewer or from the run dialog or search programs and files item in the start menu if vista / windows 7 type eventvwr.msc

Sounds to me like some dodgy browser addin/BHO. Would suggest running malware bytes or hijackthis on it.

Kingstech, I have three words that will help your problem: Norton Removal Tool There are some remnants of an old Norton install that are blocking the browsers from working. Run the tool, reboot, and you should be good to go.

 

I had this exact problem. Almost pulled my hair out with netstat, dns refresh, ping here, ping there, uninstall this, install that, etc...

Do you have any policies active from any other software on the network that may be blocking it?

How have you got gpo or gpp to apply proxy settings and what version of IE is on that machine. Also I presume its joined to the same domain ?
