Is there any additional hardware you've installed that you can take out? PCI-E cards or anything of that nature? Failing on ClassPNP.sys seems to suggest a hardware conflict.

Do you have any policies active from any other software on the network that may be blocking it?

You'd have to look into site licensing for the particular software. Check their website or get in touch with them.

Have you validated it with Windows System Image Manager?

Had a couple of problems with some Samsung NC10s and KMS licensing, but it's nothing a BIOS update didn't solve. I hear Acer had that issue, too; bear in mind that they were XP Netbooks, though, and those issues are most likely resolved OoB now with new netbooks.

When you say you're using domain.local, you mean you're using 'DOMAIN'.local i.e. your domain name?

I'm looking to import photos into AD to enable the use of thumbnail photos for accounts in Outlook. I know there's some verbose commands in Powershell that will get the job done, but I've also heard there are some downloadable GUI programs which can do the job as well. Anyone have any experience with those type of tools and can recommend a specific download? We have a 2008 R2 DC. Many thanks.

You can remove the icon altogether with a GPO. User Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Start Menu & Taskbar > Remove the Volume Control Icon.
