RobD Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Hi All, I've just come out of a budget meeting where I asked for more money for storage.....long story short I was told to investigate cloud storage. Do any schools out there use cloud storage for as their primary or second method of file storage and if so could you let me know who and if possible some rough costs? Thanks Rob
plexer Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Oh dear sounds like some managlement know buzz words. Ben 1
teejay Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Don't forget to cost in the extra bandwidth needed on your internet connection. 2
3s-gtech Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Cloud for primary storage - is this in a secondary? If yes, run for the hills. To be fair, it could work. I just can't get my head around performance issues, bandwidth, reliability, profiles, backups, shadow copies, quotas, file screening... On the plus side, that quick list reassures me that we are certainly not going to be looking at this for a good while yet.
RobD Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 Urrgghhh I know, I tried to make my point from a security point of view but they fairly quickly dismissed that idea. The next point I'll really have to make is unless you want all your data to only be access via a web browser then how could we ever be disk free?
Millgate Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Hi Rob, As Dan said, we offer off site back up. Feel free to drop me an email with more details and I'll be happy to get you a price Luke
RobD Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 Thanks Millgate, its less about backup and more about storage of data but I will keep you in mind. Does anyone out there use Google Apps for email etc? Looks very cheap in comparison to Office 365.
BJG Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I'm a fan, but it's too expensive for the amount we'd want. (Haven't had a quote from Millgate though.)

maark Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 google apps for education is free and will give you 30GB per user. We use it but still have home folders as well - not sure whether you could cope with only online storage - need a pretty fast/robust internet connection
RobD Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 I don't think its an option really, possibly google drive for personal documents and gmail as both are free but that's as far as we could go I think. We're on a 20MB leased line and due to the cost I cant image we'd increase that.
zag Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Office 365 is free as well. We use skydrive/onedrive here and its fine.
glennda Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I use offsite appliances with my customers, you have onsite storage of anything between 500gb to 40TB which then has the ability to sync itself up to the cloud. This provides the ability to boot VM's locally on the appliance and also in the cloud. Very clever little boxes
edutech4schools Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 We use Google Apps and all is good, would imagine 365 OK also. A list of cloud backup solutions. 40 Online Backup Services Reviewed (Updated January 2014)

hardtailstar Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 We just buy in external hard drives and stick all the photos/videos and anything not needed in the back up/on the server. This has worked so far. The staff are aware that the drives are not backed up.
