localzuk Posted October 8, 2007 Report Posted October 8, 2007 Hi everyone, I just thought I'd post here too: I have now set up a jabber server for edugeekers, if you would like an account please pm me and I'll create one for you. It can be accessed as a normal jabber server, or via a choice of 2 web based clients: https://wizzymail.com/xiff and https://wizzymail.com/jw The second one is the client most likely not to be filtered. The more people who have accounts, the more it'll be useful.
FN-GM Posted October 13, 2007 Report Posted October 13, 2007 I am not t sure what jabber is, is it an instant messenger of some sort? Thanks
localzuk Posted October 13, 2007 Author Report Posted October 13, 2007 Jabber is indeed an instant messaging server. Its advantage being that it is open source and free.
FN-GM Posted October 13, 2007 Report Posted October 13, 2007 I am on it now its pretty good will be better if more people get an account.
plock Posted October 18, 2007 Report Posted October 18, 2007 go for it - set me up an account... has it taken off yet?
PaulBM Posted October 18, 2007 Report Posted October 18, 2007 localzuk which server package did you choose and there seems to be 4 major clients, Spark, Psi, Exodus and Pandion, anyone of those better that the others? Just wondering if it's something that might be useful in school. AD authentication would be great. Only problem I could see is messages popping up during lessons, when teachers might have their PC on a whiteboard.
localzuk Posted October 18, 2007 Author Report Posted October 18, 2007 I chose Openfire as the server - took about 3 minutes to set up!! On the client side, I use whatever's handy including: Adium X, Spark, Pandion, PSI, JWChat, Xiffian and Pidgin. AD integration is possible, I believe, but I haven't tried it with this one. My internal school jabber server uses jabberd2 and is ad integrated.
localzuk Posted October 18, 2007 Author Report Posted October 18, 2007 Oh, and we have 8 or 9 users now. So, no, it has not yet taken off. If more people spread the word...
EduTech Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 I'd Be interested in Joining! Nice one Localzuk Regards James
russdev Posted November 25, 2007 Report Posted November 25, 2007 I have only just seen this thread create me an account please. Cheers Russell
Guest Guest Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 AD integration is possible, I believe, but I haven't tried it with this one. My internal school jabber server uses jabberd2 and is ad integrated. Ive just set up LDAP on openfire, and yes its was easy to do. Have you found any real differances between jabberd2 and openfire?

Openfire is easier to configure and tweak. Although it does use significantly more resources to run due to it being java.
localzuk Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Right, an update on this - I am now going to be killing off general use of my server, as edugeek is about to have their own.
