Michael Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Hello all, Is it possible to completely wipe a tablet running Windows RT to one running either Windows x86 or x64? I've heard that the ARM chip can process x86 commands when jail broken (not something I recommend), but was curious whether or not it can be achieved? If not then what use is a Windows RT device when it cannot run Flash out the box (limiting the number of websites) accessible and cannot run any existing locally installed applications a school are already licensed for? Thank you!
3s-gtech Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 x86 code on ARM? Only perhaps via some damn clever virtual machine (which would crawl). I'd be 99% sure that it has not and cannot be done. Plus, it would need a separate Windows license as I don't believe RT is a qualifying copy. What use is it - good question. Same use as an iPad really - no Flash, limited to the App Store environment. They're fine as web browsers and simple word processors, and at least you have some management features available. 1
chazzy2501 Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 I remember an early (2001) Compaq tablet that had a non-x86 cpu (via I think) that had a special patch for emulation that was installed before you installed XP Tablet edition... So not a whole VM just a virtual CPU. Still that tablet ran like poop.

3s-gtech Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 There are news stories around of work on getting x86 code to work on ARM CPUs. It's pretty awesome what software engineers can achieve, but it does seem like a bit of a waste of skill. ARM and x86 have their places and the hardware to fit. While they can cross-over (such as ARM in the server space) that doesn't require emulation, native code is used (like properly compiled Linux).
