[ipad] Avoid a password prompt?

Sorry if i'm misunderstanding, but why are they having to open the Meraki MDM? Does it not just get the updates automatically, prompting for the password?

 

We've got 84 in school Ipads which we configured originally using apple configurator and an IPad dock, we've also got another 80 Ipads that go home and we use Meraki on top of the configurator to add additional items as required.

 

In an ideal world it would be great to silently push out apps but I've seen nothing yet that can do it, so we have to make a compromise. Staff seem happy with it so far but its not ideal.

 

All the Ipads are linked to the VPP account and the schools ipad account which has a single password, staff are told when a app is about to be deployed and given instructions along the line of

- Switch Ipad on

- Open Meraki MDM

- Select the app from the available list

- Wait for the ITunes server to request a password

- Enter the password given in the email (This is then changed after the install to prevent misuse)

- Follow on screen instructions to install app.

- Meraki then reports if app has successfully installed.

Just to let all you folks know get profile manager set up properly (if you have a mac server) this will allow silent push of apps to all iPads and Books and Settings. Here's a small tutorial video sounds difficult but not really once you get your head around it good luck!

cheers, will give that a look when i have more time, does this eliminate the need for an MDM such as Meraki, or are you still using it over the top?

I no longer use Meraki. This is Apple's own MDM solution, it works on an internal network so no cloud based problems will be coming your way! You supervise a device using apple configurator and load up profile manager then enroll that device to specific users that is linked with an apple ID email address. You then tell profile manager what apps to deploy to that individual user. Well worth the look mate and a lot much simpler than it sounds may take you a week or two of playing with an test iPad to get it 100% though!

So, each iPad has its own user ID, and this works through VPP also? (sorry for allt he questions, hearing so many different things about iPads atm!

Ok so how I have done it is:

1. Set up a local account on the apple server I called mine iPad and inputted the email address which is also signed up for AppleID

2. Turn on Profile Manager and click the button to access the console - sign in with administrator account for the server

3. Go to apps and click "Get More" this will take you to the VPP page

4. Login to VPP and find the app and the amount of them you want ie if you have 90 iPads you want 90 licenses

5. Make sure before you "purchase" you select for MDM distribution

6. Buy the apps and wait 5 - 10 minutes the apps you have just bought will pop up under "apps" on profile manager and it will tell you the amount of app licenses available you have

7. Go to the profile manager internal webpage via the safari app and type in the username you have just created, in my terms "iPad"

8. Add the trust certificate first and install via the profile manager page then press enroll on the iPad to install the remote management profile to the iPad

9. That device will now show up under Users - *name of user here* - Devices

10. Assign the app to the users devices do this by going back to apps click on the i on the right of the app, click assign to user and add the user associated with that device

11. The apps will automatically start installing as long as under setting automatic downloads of apps is turned on on the iPad

12. You're done

I would also make sure you turn on Caching Server 2 it will save on bandwidth, you may want to speak to your LA before dong this though.
