sonofsanta Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 That's January 21st as in today. As of January 21, 2014, LogMeIn Free is no longer available. To continue using remote access, you will need to purchase an account subscription of LogMeIn Pro. And from their blog post: After ten years, LogMeIn’s free remote access product, LogMeIn Free, is going away. Starting in January, we will be unifying our portfolio of free and premium remote access products into a single offering. This product will be a paid-only offering We use(d) LogMeIn Free for the handful of users who needed remote access from home - i.e. me, bursar, couple of SMT. It worked well for what we wanted and at the price we needed. Given that it's no longer an option, then, does anyone knowa good alternative to let users connect to their workstation from home? From what I know of TeamViewer it needs someone client side to help set up the session, but I'd be delighted to be shown otherwise.
sted Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 @#*& that what i use to remote into my home pc. Certainly not worth it for me to cough up grrrrrr wondered if there was any reason behind all the3 cheap upgrade deals they kept pushing
Gatt Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I switched to TeamViewer ages ago when they started restricting LogMeIn - had a feeling this was going to happen!
Dom_ Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 You can install teamviewer and it'll run all the time, so you can connect in whenever you want (similar to logmein). 1
Koldov Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 'As of January 21, 2014, LogMeIn Free is no longer available.' Anyone else get this? Kol. 1
Arthur Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 TeamViewer is only free for home users. Schools have to pay. 1
sted Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 can you use team viewer from a webpage like log me in to get to pcs or does it need client software at both ends?
Arthur Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Yep! http://www.edugeek.net/forums/cloud-services/130463-logmein-free-shutting-down-january-21st-2014-a.html 1
Gatt Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Teamviewer also comes with Android/iPhone Apps so you can connect via your smartphone of choice, there is VPN and File Access Also, you can do meetings and send a "quick connect" link which you can email to someone to allow you to connect to their PC for support (once they've entered the relevant codes!)
sonofsanta Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Just logged into LogMeIn to verify and it turns out there is actually seven days' grace: Just found the TeamViewer host download so will look into that now cheers @ Dom_. EDIT: TeamViewer is only free for home users. Schools have to pay. @Arthur: argh! Spanner, meet works. Don't suppose they offer a decent education license? Otherwise the prices are pretty high. abillybob Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Urgh! Why oh why! Looks like I'm using join.me or TeamViewer then! 1
andyturpie Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Urgh! Why oh why! Looks like I'm using join.me or TeamViewer then! +1 for teamviewer
sonofsanta Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 can you use team viewer from a webpage like log me in to get to pcs or does it need client software at both ends? Just tested and there is a web client, worked in Firefox 1
Domino Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I've been using chrome remote desktop for helping the family out, and remote desktop gateway to access work. Both are simple and reliable. 1
sparkeh Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Argh! That's not good. Thanks for the heads up.
gmonks Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Just found this out. Thanks for the notice logmein!
Arthur Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Don't suppose they offer a decent education license? Not sure, but I have e-mailed them to find out. 1
rf600 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Yep just got the email. Nice of them to give a bit of warning
themightymrp Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 This sucks! Will have to see if Teamviewer will work for me here in school. Does it run as a service so I can connect from home without interaction this end?

Yes teamviewer does run as a service and you can configure the client to cache the session credentials so you can connect remotely without needing any interaction from the other side.
nullensc Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Teamviewer is way better than Logmein ex-free so no great loss there imho
sparkeh Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Just so you know, Teamviewer is not free for schools
sonofsanta Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Urgh! Why oh why! Looks like I'm using join.me or TeamViewer then! As @Arthur pointed out in my thread, TeamViewer isn't free for schools. And join.me is powered by LogMeIn, so that's a no go! 1
3s-gtech Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Bottoms. I have it as a backup to our regular remote access system. Not desperate for an alternative, but it'd be reassuring.
rich_tech Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I havent had the email, but I can see that this is probably tied in with me being unable to log in to my machine remotely the last week using logmein, at least teamviewer works on both windows and linux, so at least I will unify it to just one client now then looking at this.
