cheredenine Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Hello! I'm doing a little fact finding exercise and am curious. How much data are people backing up to off-site cloud based services and what sort of price are they paying? We currently use MS DPM to do our backups, with the backup server located in a different building across site from the server room. Whilst I'm happy this is sufficiently separated, it was raised in a recent governors meeting that this might not be enough, specifically in the context of having an airfield near-by and being over-flown by light aircraft occasionally! Thanks!
Tallwood_6 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 We did due redstore to backup our exchange server a couple of years ago and that cost around £650 per annum for 250gb i think. Seemed like a nice idea but we had a couple of issues with it and i lost faith in the integrity of the backups it was taking in the end so brought it back onsite.

We were actually looking into employing the RBUSS facility.
Tallwood_6 Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 System lost good seeded backups and resulting in several instances where we had to reseed overnight and start from scratch. The client support for exchange 2010 was buggy at best and support was slow to respond to issues.
Ben_Stanton Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 We use Crashplan from Ceejay - CrashPlan PROe UK Cloud Backup for UK and Europe, Enterprise, Education Users with cloud storage managed and owned by CeeJay Software in the UK. Includes CrashPlan PROe enterprise software. Does the job and is more than affordable - call for educational pricing. 1
Edu-IT Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 How are you finding it Ben, or anyone else for that matter? At £20 a month it seems very cheap?
mattt Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Our feeder primaries, who we support, get Attix backup through the LA (so not sure of cost). Been impressed with the service though. Attix5 Pro Server Edition & Plug-ins
jbailey Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I believe MS just announced a 50% reduction on Azure cloud storage in line with reductions from Amazon? we use rbuss\attix at 3 schools to backup SIMS and some SMT data, its around 300\400 per year, then local backups to DPM in separate locations - I think rbuss is a good \ reliable scheme but can get expensive when backing up user data. I had DPM to Azure storage running as a test a while back but it was more about testing the tech rather then the price, what worried me was the "faff" factor in how data is going to be resorted, if I have a onsite DPM server with security credentials to access my cloud backup, and that DPM server was just wiped out by a flood\fire\whatever then how quick\easy is it going to be for me to get something else running to access the cloud considering I am in the middle of a disaster. The other option If you have multiple locations is to backup DPM servers from one site to another, something I am also looking currently as possibly cheaper and quicker to access when needed than Azure. As I am generally rather suspicious - as is my business manager - of "pay as you go" data use. hope that helps. 1
jbailey Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Timely - MS just sent me a newsletter: Announcing Reduced Pricing on Storage - Windows Azure - Site Home - MSDN Blogs 1
rj_mayer Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 We tend to be satisfied keeping all backups on-site, but replicating to separate buildings (we have a sprawling site), using Veeam and other tools. I've never been comfortable trusting a third party with the college data, however robust SLAs might be. If I get challenged from a data governance/security perspective as to where the data resides, I can point to the various SAN and NAS units that house it. I like it that way. We also have access control, CCTV and climate monitoring in place, managed by the college, adding further peace of mind about the security and safety of the information.
dhicks Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I believe MS just announced a 50% reduction on Azure cloud storage in line with reductions from Amazon? Ah - I see Amazon are now offering reduced-redundancy storage (they might have been offering that for a while, I just didn't notice) for around £40 per TB per month. That's still going to get pricy if you start heading up into multi-TB stores of photos and so forth.
Jobos Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 We're currently using Backup Assist and have two methods of backup. 6 days a week BA does a file backup to NAS and the other day it does a bare metal backup to external HD which is rotated using 2 different HDs. The office copies the sims backup to an encrypted drive and takes it home, again using two different external HDs The HT would now like to use cloud backup and by a stroke of luck the LA has been offering RBUSS Plus but the prices are making my eyes water! 500GB of £1300, 1TB for £2600 and 1.5TB for £3500. Surely it can't be that expensive? I think we would struggle to fit everything into the 500GB version so leaves a nasty bill of £2600 pa.
Edu-IT Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 We're using IASO through a UK company at the moment and pay about 26p per GB. Will be moving to this soon as it's same system but better price. https://www.opsoftware.net/online-cloud-backup/ 2

Thanks I'll be taking a closer look. 1
TIOAOA Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Did either of @Jobos or @Edu-IT opt for the op sofware solution yet? Considering it myself and wanted a bit of feedback
Edu-IT Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 I'm not using it through OP yet, but I am through another provider. It's the same service just different reseller. :-)
Jobos Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Did either of @Jobos or @Edu-IT opt for the op sofware solution yet? Considering it myself and wanted a bit of feedback They have very attractive pricing but not started it, just too busy in the holidays so I'm going to save it till autumn term when the dust has settled.
Arthur Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 Will be moving to this soon as it's same system but better price. https://www.opsoftware.net/online-cloud-backup/ Is it cheaper because you get less storage? 1,000 Gb is only 125 GB. That's not much at all! http://vgy.me/cwUFmf.png

TIOAOA Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I'm not using it through OP yet, but I am through another provider. It's the same service just different reseller. :-) And what are your thoughts on the service as a solution ?
Arthur Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I think it should be GB. I thought it might be a typo, but you never know. It's a bit worrying that a company that (re)sells a cloud backup service doesn't know the difference between bits and bytes. @ICTNUT. Any chance it could be fixed? 1
Edu-IT Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 And what are your thoughts on the service as a solution ? Perfect. Does exactly what we want it to do. Occasionally had to restore a few files and it's very quick. 1
ICTNUT Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Hi All, Yes it is GB and not Gb :-) Page has been updated to reflect this. @Edu-IT is correct in what he says, give us a shout if you have any questions. NOTE: we do not get notifications from EduGeek for some reason so we may not answer right away to posts placed here, however you can use the live chat facility on our site or email us directly if that helps :-) 1
round2it Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 try gigasoft they are quite cheap and comply to all the rules required 1
