  17. Bearing in mind the annual cost of implementing one of the mainstream options for Visitor Management over 14 of our schools, we’re developing our own. It features all the obvious on-screen sign-in options including photograph taking, staff card scanning and visitor badge printing. Student and staff data is sourced from our MIS systems via the Wonde service. It will cost a one-time £600 per installation for the hardware, which includes a Microsoft Surface Go 2, card reader, label printer, mounting case and bracket and USB hub and wires. The schools will pay no extra for the software, ever. Private cloud hosted, the data can be aggregated across the Trust and managed on a per-site basis. Evacuation lists are available at press of a button and regular digests sent to configured audiences. The main core took 3 days to build and we foresee another week or two of dedicated time to build in all the additional features such as O365/Google calendar integration for expected visitor notifications etc. With an uplift to our Wonde subscription, we could implement an attendance write-back, if the appetite is there. It’s been in trial for the past year on one site and going into another this Summer. Just the way we’re approaching that particular challenge, so I thought I’d share. Richard

  19. What is the most efficient method to perform a switch from using Promethean ActivInspire to Clevertouch Lynx boards, in terms of IWB files? A school has approached me with this issue, as they’ve switched out their old boards without thinking things through. If anyone has managed such a migration in the past and found an efficient way to manage this aspect of the change, I would be grateful to hear your thoughts. Richard
  20. I tend to go down to the London one, as it's no big deal from Cambridge. As an event, it's clearly more focussed on the wider IT world than BETT's educational remit, but I've found several gems whilst visiting. The freebies are much more generous, too... Worth a visit, at least once.

  22. We're in the EES agreement. I rang yesterday, needing the KMS for both Windows 10 and Office 2016 as they weren't on the VLSC. It was easy - they just said it needed to be requested by calling. They typed for a bit and then it appeared. I suggested that a message on the area you'd expect to find the code might be appropriate.
  23. Now written and working, along with a PHP implementation of the Wisepay Auto Upload Web service. Just contact me if you want to do the same.
  24. We use our own solution, which at the signage end is a Rasberry Pi, connected over HDMI to whatever screen you can source - ours range from 24" to 55", depending on the space. They boot automatically into the standard Raspbian O/S and open Midori to a preconfigured webpage, hosted locally. The several screens across the site display similar layouts, depending on size and aspect etc. Feeds include a Twitter account, choice of RSS, our current public WIFI PIN, Caterer's menu, Calendar feed (from Exchange EWS) and photo gallery (NTFS-secured photo repository share). Each screen has its own personality (as well as the choice of layout), so all of the above are configurable in a DB to reflect the needs of the screen's position. A basic management interface allows remote a send/receive of configuration over SSH and VNC for viewing the screen's display live. The server side runs IIS and serves PHP pages, with MySQL hosting much of the cached RSS/Twitter/Exchange data and allows easy manipulation of display aspects to suit local need. AJAX ensures content is drawn regularly and rotated at different rates per section, depending on need. Aside from server infrastructure (assumed to be existing) and the screens themselves, each deployment costs us around £50, for the PI, box and various leads. We consider it a pretty good value system that delivers relevant and current content to the college community, with devolved administration to areas, yet minimal overhead on existing content management, assuming the various sources are already being used. Just thought I'd share our approach.
  25. I did investigate this path previously, but it was Vericool's view that by doing so, one would be running an unlicensed copy of the software... They don't condone such use of their application suite. They didn't say it was illegal, mind, but the inference was definitely that we'd be on slightly dodgy ground.
