Ran constantly for 1.2KM for the first time ever last night! Seem to be getting the hang of breathing a little better too..! Aiming to book myself on a 5km run at some point around April, want to find a friend to do it with as I'm scared to do it just on my own!

Well done. Always nice to reach mile stones. Try and find yourself a park run nearby. Nice and easy non competitive races and they are 5k. I started off doing them not being able to run more than 1k and having to stop start stop start but still worth getting out there.

That's a great effort :-) Well done!

As said in the post above, find yourself a local Park Run. They're really really good. The people are really welcoming, it's not competitive and everyone wants you to do well. Even if you can't run the whole thing, there is nothing wrong with walking and running it and you will get unbelievable support all the way round!

Mentioned it on the general fitness thread, but i'll mention it on here too

Started running again 3 weeks ago, first run was 2.05m in 24 something, second run was 2.2m in 23.52, last week's run was 2.7m in 29 minutes. Going for a run tonight. Unsure weather to try and go further, or try and do a shorter distance faster, just to mix it up a bit. Thoughts?

Just had a look in to this - there is one in the main large park near us! Mentioned it to my friend who said early next year would be a good start, so still gives me time to train up a bit and to be able to run further!

Might be worth going for the 3m (or just over) and seeing how you go. Are you using an app or a watch to track time and distance?

I'm using my Dad's old Garmin Forerunner 10, very basic but does what i need it too. Just over 3m for Park Run distance sounds tempting.... (3.16 i believe...) I'm just worried i'll pick up an injury (various injuries in past, bad knee, shin splints, and damaged ankle/calf), still want to build up to that distance and do park run before the end of the month.

I use a Garmin Forerunner 10. Good watch though mine is suffering at the moment. I use Garmin Express to upload data re routes and times to GarminConnect. Not keen on Garmin Express as it seems a bit unreliable (though it could be my old laptop causing the problem)

Good luck with the run!

just back from Dublin having run the Movember 10k on Saturday with a group from Swindon Shin Splints. Very wet. Nice event. First pint for 6 months consumed after the event.

Was to run as a group but I couldn't get warm at the pace we were going so had to scoot ahead of the main group. 54mins 54secs for 6.24miles.

Most useless item in my luggage was a pair of sun glasses; most useful were the bin bags to use for keeping the after run clothes dry and 1 to wear while waiting for the run to start.

Ran over 5 k (did 3.6 miles, 3.16 is 5k) for the first time in probably a couple of years. Also had a nice sprint finish up a hill! did that run in 37 minutes, would of done the 5k in ~ 34 minutes.

Chuffed :D

Attached picture with run details, actually did the 5k a lot quicker than I thought I had.

Ran another 2.5 miles last week, going to do one more run Wednesday then going to do the local ParkRun Saturday. Have to be cautious though as my shins have been a tad uncomfortable the last run i did/when i played football yesterday. Just got to keep stretching!

first buggy push completed on Sunday - Swindon 10k. Team of 5 pushing a young lad not able to run himself.

First time I've ever worn a tutu and first time I've run wearing Daffodil shaped headwear..... I must be getting old.

Apologies for de-railing this thread a little bit. I'm looking for a piece of outerwear for when I'm running through the winter. I want something that will keep me nice and visible whilst also keeping me warm and dry. Can anyone recommend me anything?

Currently liking the look of this (although John lewis are currently doing it for £68)

Vizion Mistral Jacket

Thanks

Just starting to get back into a bit of running now. I've a bad habit of running consistently for a few months, then stopping and ending up back at square one again!

I'm in the need of a new pair of trainers for running. Anyone have any recommendations for a pair at a reasonable price?

Iain,

I've a Ron Hill hi viz jacket obtained at local Go Outdoors. Lower spec/cheaper than the one you've listed but seems to do the job (though I generally overheat when layering up) bar keeping dry in a torrential downpour.

Also have a hi viz mesh vest for those times when I know that I'll be too hot in a jacket. Also have small hand torch and head torch for the darker evening runs.

Hi @jambocb i'd say the best thing to do is go and get yourself properly fitted for a pair at a specialist shop. Bad fitting shoes can cause you injuries, as everyone's running style is different.

Sorry I can't be of much help, but getting fitted for shoes has really helped me due to the way I run

Small 2 mile run yesterday, gentle.

Leg cramped up half way through and had to stretch it out, that's happened on a couple of my runs, but this one started quite early. Unsure if related to previous ankle/shin issues but once stretched it's fine. Just a pain i have to stop.

Running the local ParkRun tomorrow morning, for the first time since....wow...october last year. Was sure id done one since, clearly not!

If anyone's interested....

That 27:23 was a TOTAL fluke. God knows what i'd had for breakfast that day/dinner the night before.

Edit: Did some more digging, did a run at another parkrun in April....32 minutes something.

my "mean" time is 29.59, would be nice to beat that time.

Good list. Take the 27:23 as your running speed - you've been holding back (sandbagging) on the other runs :-)

May want to do some more stretching/warm ups before running to help with the cramps.

Ran it in 32:45

Really struggled in the last mile.

Had some motivation though as there were a bunch of runners from a group that i overheard were doing their first parkrun from couch to 5k, so for myself (selfishly) I wanted to beat any that i saw ahead of me. Was just a shame about the last mile though, quite a few people i had overtook got back past me!

unsure, havent uploaded my data yet, but my Dad (who i ran with) did tell me.

10:1?

10.2?

11.3?

roughly, and i dont know about the last .16 mile that makes it to 5k, but i had some more left in the tank for a strong finish.

I haven't done a Park Run for a while (usually cycle to the event and then do a bit of a warm up) but when I run from outside the front door on a 3miler I usually run a slower first mile (warm up), slightly faster 2nd mile and then go for the 3rd mile e.g.

23rd Nov : 9:14 8:46 7:54

28th Nov : 9:26 9:13 8:32

Every so often I do try to do a faster first mile, slower 2nd mile and then faster 3rd mile. Will be doing some more of this through December/January to try and get a bit stronger at the start (I'm keen to get all the miles < 8mins on 3mile and 5k runs)

Do you have your Forerunner set with a pace beeper? Can be both useful and annoying for telling you when you're On Pace, Ahead of Pace, Behind Pace

I'm the same. It's usually down to confidence for me. I'm so nervous of starting off so quick and not being able to finish I always tend to be conservative during the first half at least.
