Little-Miss Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Ok, so i've got windows 8 installed on 16 machines, software seems to work happily enough. Now i need to tweak it. I downloaded the 2012/8 ADMX templates from MS and installed them. I went to add the templates as normal, but i can't see them. Is this because 2008 can't use them? So if thats the case, i need to do it locally on an 8 client first?
3s-gtech Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I'm hearing this a lot - that you need to have a 2012 DC or Windows 8 machine with RSAT on to administrate the new policies - but I have a 2008 R2 DC (as well as a 2012 R2 one) and I am looking at 8 and 8.1 policies right now on it. It's a bit confusing - I didn't do anything different to normal - just copied the ADMXs from an 8.1 machine into the sysvol. I have obviously updated the schema now too to support my 2012 R2 DC, but I did this afterwards. I don't have any 2008 DCs to check for you, but according to MS you should be able to administrate any ADMX using Server 2008 onwards. You can't administrate some GPPs of course, like the official IE10 and IE11 ones.

LeMarchand Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) I'll make an idiot of myself as no-one else has. I couldn't get the download to do anything as well. I believe the preferred option is to use RSAT from a newer machine, but I've never got that working either! What I did was a Frankenstein of various people's advice and created a central store for the policies on the server by creating a folder called PolicyDefinitions in \\FQDN\SYSVOL\FQD\Policies (e.g. school.wherever.com\sysvol\school.wherever.com\policies) then I just copied over the contents of %windir%\PolicyDefinitions from a Win8.1 machine. The new definitions were then available. Not sure if that's the correct way to do it, but it seems to be working for me! Grrrr.... none of the above posts were showing when I pressed "Reply". Little-Miss Posted January 10, 2014 Author Posted January 10, 2014 Well, they are currently sat where they were the MSI extracted them. I've read about placing them in the central store but it made me a little nervous. So you just plonk a folder in there?

Arthur Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 So you just plonk a folder in there? Yeah. It's just a case of copying and pasting the files into the appropriate folder within your SYSVOL folder.

Where did the MSI extract to? I could take a look and do a quick check.

qcomer Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 If you have a central store, you will need to place the new admx and adml files in there. Then from an 8.1/server 2012R2 machine you will be able to manage the new policies. You will not see them from a windows 7/server 2008 machine only from the newer OS.
