New Head Unit for Octavia - Advice Please

I know I should really post this on a Skoda Drivers Forum but I only have one question and I dont want to sign up to yet another forum.

 

Wife has an 07 Skoda Octavia Sport which currently has the stock Skoda Octavia 'stream' 2 din head unit.

 

I want to change this out for an aftermarket single or double din unit. I am not bothered about touch-screen or anything it just has to have bluetooth for hand-free and audio streaming. Double Din units start around £129, then I have to buy the wiring harness convertor at around £15 and a bezel surround to make it all fit nice.

 

Or I could buy a single din unit and then get a surround that blanks off the rest. Single Din units are a little cheaper.

 

Has anyone done anything like this? Is it better to stick with a 2 Din unit or will it look ok with a single Din unit? Last thing I want is that it looks like a bodge job.

I've done it on mine. I had the stream and upgraded it to a bolero. You may need to update you can bus depending on the year and version - I think 2007 was when they were changing the version. I bought the canbus for £75 and a second hand bolero HU off ebay for £150. The sound is so much better. Comes with built in CD Changer and SD Card reader.

 

In my opinion non OEM look a bit odd. There is a ton of info on this on briskoda.net

I had a sony xav61bt up until recently, picked it up off ebay for under £200, main reason I went for the touch screen is I could mirror the screen for sat nav use. Hands free also worked better then any factory fitted one I've had. It was fitted in a seat leon which has the same wiring as the octavia, can pick up the ISO adapter for under £10. Pretty sure you can find older models for less too. I previously had a kenwood bluetooth streaming one wich would randomly drop connection or stutter, my partner has a single din bluetooth sony model which also often does the same.

My friend has put an alpine single din unit in his.

 

He bought a really nice adapter plate from ebay - it had inlays that matched the trim in the car - and it looked like a really nice job when he'd finished.

 

He also upgraded the speakers in the doors too.

I was hoping to spend around £150 all in. The OEM units are too expensive. What is the canbus for?

You need to make sure its set right, things on CANBUS can be things such as speed related volume, steering wheel controls, dash information about the audio settings etc... Also some cheap adapter kits can bodge the wiring of lives and then fry diagnostics tools or create other issues so the cheap wiring kits are to be avoided.

 

My VW has CANBUS and yes I have the VW in-dash headunit still but have a Parrot bluetooth kit which had to have a specific kit to ensure that the CANBUS give the signals for the live feeds etc... as its not like an older car where you have the simple wires to splice into its quite computerised.

 

Well worth checking online or using specific forums, I did for mine and have had no issues (and I also didn't want to trash a disgustingly expensive VW colour headunit with sat nav, dvd, tv etc...)

Yes. If you have the old version like I said previously it can cause battery drain. I had to change mine. It's a simple job.
