Multimedia Science School - Latest Version of Shockwave Causing Problems?

Hi my name is Perry Leigh from a company called INASIA Learning Ltd who support and sell Multimedia Science School (Previously supported by PLATO Learning Ltd and RM). Here is a support note if you are seeing problems when upgrading to the latest version of the Shockwave. Any problems then please contact me directly.

 

Symptoms

You may find that upgrading to the latest version of Shockwave (12.0.7.148) causes problems with Network and Standalone versions of Multimedia Science School 11-16. You may get the error “MSS Content Browser has stopped working” with the only option is to close the program. Previous versions of Shockwave before version 12.0.4.144 seem to work without problem (except for the Diffusion and Osmosis module, see separate support note). On-line versions of Multimedia Science School delivered through a VLE/LMS or from the Multimedia Science School portal are unaffected.

 

Cause

It seems that the latest version of Shockwave is not compatible with the browser component that is part of the Multimedia Science School application. To fix just install an older version of Shockwave but it is recommended that Version 10 is installed because this version is able to coexist with the latest version. Using this version will allow Multimedia Media Science School to work but also keep compatibility with other Shockwave content you may have.

 

Fix

To fix this problem quite simply install the version of Shockwave (Version 10) that is on the Multimedia Science School installation CD, (\supportfiles\installers\shockwave) or download from here.: www.multimediascienceschool.com/shockwave/Shockwave_Installer_Full_101.exe When the install completes you may get the error “Windows cannot find C:/Users/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/Applicationm/chrome.exe” Please ignore this message and click OK twice to close. You will find that once this older version of Shockwave is installed that Multimedia Science School will start working again. Please note that installing the older version of Shockwave does not overwrite the latest version of Shockwave installed already on the computer but is advised that in Google Chrome that you disable the older version. Do this by typing in the browser of Chrome http://chrome://plugins/ then just scroll down until you reach Adobe Shockwave Player - Version: 10.1r11 and then disable. This will unsure that there are no other incompatibilities with other Shockwave content that you may be using. Internet Explorer and Firefox are not affected by the installation of the older version of Shockwave so no need to reconfigure.

Alternative Fix

As mentioned previously the On-line versions (SCORM) of the software are unaffected by the latest version of Shockwave so you may consider upgrading so that it can run through the School or College LMS or VLE. This has 2 main advantages in that Multimedia Science School is not installed directly onto the network so is easier to manage and also Students can access the software from home. I've actually spoken too soon. When I click on any of the content now, it doesn't bomb out as it did before, but it does say "This application requires and Xtra (Flash Movie...) that either does not exist or failed to initialize properly. Please make sure the appropriate Xtras are in the Xtras folder(s).

 

I've checked the Xtras folders at C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Shockwave 10\Xtras and C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Shockwave 8\Xtras and both folders are populated with the Xtras from the installer folder.

 

Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear that you are still having problems, I suggest you try a complete re- installation of both the software and shockwave plugin. Also make sure that you when you run the software for the first time that you are logged on as an administrator so that files can be updated in the system.

To fix the problem either install version 10 of shockwave, or upgrade to the SCORM version so that you can run through your VLE. If you do not have a VLE then the school can subscribe to the MSS Portal. As it looks like you already have a site license for MSS we only charge the hosting and Management Fee for the Portal. @eddyc did you ever fix this? I've got the same issue and have re-installed several times now.

 

No I've given up with it I'm afraid. I didn't have the time to peruse.

We have the same issue as above... I think we're probably going to move to the online version soon so not too fussed.

Hi,

 

I am afraid we are having a real problem in getting the Diffusion and Osmosis to work and will need some specialist programming expertise in which to fix. I have been working on this over the last few weeks and hope to secure a specialist to get it to work. In the meantime, I am suggesting that the Diffusion and Osmosis modules that are in the MSS 16-18 version of the software should be used.

Shockwave upgrade didn't work for us.

We have a site license and ours isn't working even after v10 shockwave installed. How much does it cost for the portal option mentioned above, or SCORM upgrade?

Hi Jo,

 

Price for access to the MSS Portal is £295 per year, this is for the whole school and anyone with a valid email address, teachers or students.

 

Price for the SCORM Version is £595

Is this the price of the "hosting and management only" option as you mentioned to another user above?
