Toshiba Encore £200 windows 8.1 tablet

I've just got one through the post quad core atom and 2gb of ram. 32bit windows 8.1.

All I can say so far is that its got a nice screen its fast and slick in the menus. It's a little heavy but with a textured back easy to hold. (not an ipad slippy)

 

any software requests?

 

I want to put sims onto it but I need to install windows 8.1 enterprise which looks like Ill need a micro usb to host usb socket. Unless I can get a microsd card that will hold a windows install.

 

I'd like to WDS it but no Ethernet connection although it offers pxe boot?

Few questions:

 

How much storage space do you have after removing the bloatware?

 

Can you disable the cameras in the BIOS?

 

Did you get a stand case with it?

 

What do you intend to do with it? Personal use, Staff use, 1-2-1 deployment for pupils or just trialing tablet offerings?

Ebuyer are selling off their stock at £203.32+VAT. Seems like a good price.

Is it worth getting one?

Only issue with all of these is 2GB of RAM. All this fuss about Bay Trail Atom being 64 bit (and a pretty capable processor in its own right) yet sticking so little RAM in that it's hobbled - 8.1 + SIMS running and there's not a lot left.

Agreed although I have also had a play with one of these only for an hour mind as one of my friends has got one and he runs Adobe CS6 on his and Photoshop seems to work quite well. Plus some of the old admin machines that run sims here are on a Pentium 4 with 1GB Ram, 2GB if they're lucky. Sims seems to run ok on these. Let us know how well sims runs on it

Update: I was able to install full Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition (32 bit) onto this using a usb host bus adaptor. (from my android tablet) It's domained and works great... So far. It actually crashes less now that I've done a clean install with Toshibas latest drivers. The camera app will still crash if it can't find the directory to save the photos. (My docs issue) but Direct connect is up and running...sweet. I've installed spooky bonus yay! but using windows programs with no mouse and keyboard is... tricky. Apologies for dragging up an old thread, but we've recently grabbed one of these devices for a very reasonable price, but am really struggling to get it to boot from a USB stick in order to put a new OS on it.

 

How did you manage to get 8.1 Enterprise onto it? I can't get the machine to see any USB stick i've created for it, either with the Windows USB/DVD Tool or with Rufus, it never shows up in the BIOS in order to boot from. I've taken a backup of the drive and it'll nicely boot from that, but otherwise it won't boot from anything..

 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

missed this one! I put the 32 bit version on a fat32 formatted usb stick. (drag and dropped the contents of the dvd onto it)

 

I had it plugged into a usb hub with a kbd and mouse it had no issues.

Anyone got a Toshiba WT8-A-105 and managed to PXE boot the device using a USB > CAT5 adaptor?

 

The only option I can see in the bios is USB booting.

I've got one in for testing, but I've not had much time to play with it. I haven't had chance to try any other OS on it.

Mine didn't have a key in for the pre-installed Office2013 but fortunately for me I got one from the supplier.

 

I was hoping to use it to placate the iPad fanboys but I'm not yet convinced myself.

We've got one, and just ordered 95!

 

PXE Booting is a no go, don't even bother. We're using a USB stick with the WIM on it.
