Problems running JAVA with out of date or expired version of JAVA

Just took a phone call from Head of IT.

Half the room cannot open:

LMC Simulator

They get a BlockedException : Application Error

"your security settings have blocked an application from running with an out-of-date or expired version of java"

Anyone got any ideas?

I'd recommend updating Java... that message only appears once your Java version is REALLY old and full of more holes than a seive that somebody shot with a shotgun!

These PC's were only deployed in June 2013 so the JAVA cannot be that out of date - can it?

Is five months that bad?

We have over 850 PC's how can we centrally keep them all up to date?

One month is bad. Five is horrific since the Java plug-in has more holes than a sieve!

SCCM or Local Update Publisher.

I believe this is an IE10 feature Microsoft have introduced. Unfortunately I think you have little choice other than to continue to roll out later/newer versions of Java via GPO.

The PC's in question are 64bit Windows 7 with IE9

This is a new thing. We have had it here on IE9 too. Wise to update Java, and Java releases a new update every few months. I use Ninite to keep on top of everything.

Do you use the PRO version to keep your domain PC's up to date?

Well it sounds like the same thing then - I have no networks running IE9 now, they're all IE10.

we have some software that brings this message up because the java update is actually too new, we downgrade to an old version and it works fine, but this causes security risks so we have just had to say sorry but we can't do much about it.

It is rather frustrating that a large proportion of software still uses Java. Why on earth Apple decided to block Flash rather than Java (on the iPad for example) - it makes no sense at all.

I think Sun developers need to start making incremental updates rather than full updates every month.

No, just the free version. Just go to each machine manually and set it off. We use it to update 80% of our apps.

Once you have set off the last machine, the first one is usually finished.

I have 850!

Deploying Java via GPO is generally hit and miss. I've had more success uninstalling the previous version, then installing the newer version all by GPO.

Don't you just love this job!!

That's why I avoid Java wherever possible and only install it on machines that require it. I'd definitely suggest you perform some tests with a small group of machines before deploying domain wide.

Tested on a PC on my desk and tested with the OU where the room in question with the issues was and it's updated from udpate 25 to 45 (32bit version).

I will give it a few days then update some other OU's and take it easy till the whole site is updated...

Thanks for everyones help :)

I've had issues with u25 and u40 uninstalling. GPO majes it easy. If java is just used on certain sites you can configure a java deployment rule set. You specify the domain and the version of java you want to use. You can block all other domains. You do need to sign the jar file which contains the xml. Doing it this way means that you get no warnings for named domains. I can post instructions.
