Question about sql 2005

Do i have to upgrade sql 2000 to sql 2005 or can I move sims on to a fresh install of sql 2005 express. I only ask because I will need a new server for sims anyway and don't realy like the idea of having to pay £1700 for sql 2005 and the cals.

 

If I can move the sims database accross to a new server with sql 2005 express then all I have to do is find the money for a new server, then I asume I can upgrade from sql 2005 express to sql 2005 at a later date.

I've phoned them up, waiting on a call back. just wondered if anyone knew the answer or not.

Unless you're willing to pay eye-watering consultancy fees or you're very well clued up on SIMS, don't expect any help from Capita.

 

I am dreading this but I am getting the personnel5 conversion out the way first. Then I will worry about SQL.

You can use SQL Express if your database is below 4G. The school price for SQL Server shouldn't be anything like £1700.

SQL Express will only use up to 1Gb RAM so I would be concerned that moving from a full version of SQL Server to a restricted version would have a negative impact on performance

You may find that per-processor licesning for SQL is cheaper than per server/client licensing. It's worth looking at anyway.

In the experience of our schools support team, the move to SQL was not that bad. The key thing is to try it out first. Set up a test system (can be on a real standalone PC/Server or a VM). Install SIMS and test the migration path.

 

Migration is done 'online', so it should not be a problem migrating directly from the old SQL 2000 system to SQL 2005 (express) on new hardware.
