Its a big fat banner in the store not an update infourtunatly you can also try the direct link from your 8 device here, copy and paste to IE address bar

Yeah there is nothing in the store for me, not uncommon it seems. I am trying another suggestion that a lot of people are having success with, which is to uninstall kb2871389 (a pre-req of 8.1) and reinstall. If not I'll try your suggestion, thanks.

 

Also, worth nothing, that during my trawls I have discovered that, currently, 8.1 will not install on Enterprise versions or installations activated with KMS...

 

edit: Oh also some of my earlier problems were solved by actually logging into the Windows Store...

Well reinstalling kb didn't work and pasting both url into browser didn't work either, the store just opens but still no upgrade...out of ideas now.

not done much with win8 yet but was appalled when i installed the 8.1 update and found that it does the windows.old folder trick and completely nuked the wireless on the laptop (HP 250G1) system restore and it works right out of the box.

 

i think they REALLY have dropped a massive b*llock with win 8 on none touch devices

 

That's interesting - I wonder if Microsoft consider 8.1 to be a completely new OS rather than an upgrade?

i thought that at 1st but i havent found a customer download for the win 8.1 iso yet.....

if there isnt its REALLY poor as some people might wish for a complete wipe and reinstall to use 8.1

There isn't going to be a customer download for the 8.1 iso. The only place you'll get one is from MSDN, Technet or MVLS.

It's funny, in a sad way, this was supposed to be their new direction of easy quick seamless os updates. It has been the most unreliable service pack I have ever dealt with, killing drivers etc. There design team need a good sharp kick in the pants for this one.

and it needs to be a standalone download like a service pack as its silly to download it 2 or more times at home nevermind in a workplace that has pro for 20+ pcs

I actually really liked Windows 8 and have always defended it. 8.1 has just annoyed me though; the upgrade path is ridiculous having to download in multiple times on home devices, have had countless problems with drivers etc. on machines that I have upgraded and worked seamlessly on 8 and as a big SkyDrive user I think its ridiculous that you cant use the new SkyDrive app with a local windows account and the desktop client no longer works.

By the sounds of things then, I'd probably opt for a clean Win 8.1 install rather than upgrading. It sounds a mess.

 

For those that need to upgrade however, can't 8.1 be deployed via WSUS? I can see 8.1 options listed in WSUS.

These are the options I see, however I have no Win 8 or Win 8.1 clients. I'm just trying to help you guys!

Probably just updates for 8.1 as the update itself does not come through windows update but is considered a new product.

I tried running the installer on the iso here and that failed miserably, I was getting stuck at 100% all the time here, before deciding to nuke my machine and get it installed from scratch.

 

What I will say though, its excellent so far, lot of the gripes I had are gone and even the start screen now can be made infinitely better than it was before.

On a side note: for those having issues with windows update whilst using a proxy on 2012 we had the same issue. I can't remember the command but you can set a sort of system proxy (not the ie one) and windows update seemed to work straight after doing that.

8.1 still requires the proxy to be set manually for apps/desktop which is daft - surely a system wide proxy isn't too hard for MS to incoporate?

 

But the 100% disk usage lockout that I experienced (and many others as well) seems to have lessened with 8.1 - it still shows 100% at startup but it drops soon afterwards which is what I'd expect!
