I73930k, 16gb 2011mhz gskill ram, 500gb ssd (maybe), mobo and fan i'm unsure about... psu too, unsure... case... hmmm... NZXT or Coolmaster full tower.

I'd expect SteamOS to be faster than stock Ubuntu especially on dedicated hardware because they are free to include specific patches to make things run better.

Here are Valve's 12 Steam Machines partners (so far) « Engadget

 

Thus far, the only third parties we know of that're making Steam Machines are iBuyPower (pictured above) and Digital Storm -- today, that all changes. Alienware, Falcon Northwest, iBuyPower, CyberPowerPC, Origin PC, Gigabyte, Materiel.net, Webhallen, Alternate, Next, Zotac and Scan Computers are among the first companies signed on to support Valve's initiative, Engadget learned this afternoon.

 

The entire lineup will be on display this week at CES 2014, and we'll have many more details in the coming days. Beyond the dozen companies above, it's totally possible that there are other third parties signed on for Steam Machines -- we'll have to wait and see when Valve unveils everything at its press conference tomorrow afternoon.

I see that some manufacturers couldn't resist putting superbright LEDs on their Steam Machines to light up peoples living rooms.

That Next SPA machine looks like some horrible early XBox prototype!

 

I like the look of the Digital Storm machine but I think side/top mounted USBs are an awful idea for a PC intended as primarily being used as a games console - trip over your pad and you could quite easily break the USB off in the socket... would not be happy having just spent the best part of £2k!

Yeah. They should have stuck with the standard Antec ISK600 case (without the X), or better still, chosen a nicer looking case.

I'd say the iBuyPower SBX, Scan and Alienware devices are the best looking. The others are either ridiculous (CyberPower - looks like the crazed drawings of a 9 year old), or just plain not trying.

Steam Controller impressions: A case of love-and-hate-at-first-sight « Ars Technica

 

A full evaluation of the Steam Controller will obviously take much more than the few minutes I had with it tonight. Tonight's first impression, though, left me extremely conflicted, with each potential step forward in design matched by a seemingly equal step back.

I thought the reason most PC gamers shot down console users was (apart from graphics) the fact they could react much faster in first person shooters like Battlefield as they had a mouse and a keyboard.

 

Have steam not shot themselves in the foot with this controller or can you still use a mouse and keyboard?

You can still use a keyboard and mouse.

You can still use a KB and mouse. I also believe (can't say for definite as I haven't used one) that the controller works more like a track pad than a traditional analog stick, meaning you'd still get the faster turning etc. you'd get with a mouse.

Meh... not to keen. Can't see why someone would buy this especially when these are going to be at least £100 more than a PS4, I don't think it would take off, also those using steam use it on a Windows gaming PC already so why would they want to spend additional £'s for what they already have! I don't see how this is different to me plugging in a computer to my TV via HDMI socket and hooking up a wireless controller such as the Xbox 360 one. I'd love an excuse to buy one but they just don't tick ANY boxes for me and I can't see who this would tick boxes for!!! Personally I think this is a crap idea though I'd like someone to persuade me otherwise!!

As far as I can see it isn't. With the exceptions of a smaller case that looks neater on your TV stand and the possible/rumored speed increase due to it been linux based.

 

I think it comes down to the target market, which I think is going to be younger console gamers that might not know how to set up a gaming rig etc.

Ultimately systems live and die by their 3rd party developer and publisher support, this looks rather limited for linux only Steam.
