Dell sell Managed PowerConnect 5324's at around £400, I've just moved our network over to 5324's and 6024's. The CLI is like Cisco's IOS and there's an easy web interface to configure them too. With the managed switches you'll be able to monitor with SNMP, set up VLAN's etc, even secure the switches on a per port basis.

(it is in draft though) '8)' So I will re phase my question, what managed switch shall I purchase. Currently I have a Netgear FSM726 which has 2 GB inputs and 24 10/100 Mpbs outputs. Anyone care to recommend one that can be linked to the existing switch and has 24 port GB outputs. Alex
indie Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 I can recommend the Dell PowerConnect 5324's, they have 24 Gigabit Copper Ports and 4 SFP slots to add fiber connectivity if needed. The switch fabric is 48GBps which means each ports has the ability to operate at full duplex 100% of the time (some cheaper switches dont switch internally at 2GBps per port). It has Auto MDI/MDIX, EEE 802.1p tagging and DCSP for QoS. The list price on the Dell website is £666 but I got ours down to £399 after sweet talking my rep.
Ric_ Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 I like HP - they work and work and work... You also get a lifetime warranty and they can be managed via a web GUI or a CLI. HP also offer educational discount. At the end of the day, I simply recommend that you stick to 1 manufacturer.
Michael Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 I also use HP2324 and HP2524 switches and a managed HP6108 acting as my gigabit backbone which keeps the network traffic running smoothly. HP's unmanaged 24 port gigabit switch is the 2700 series (2724) which you can view here
Disease Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 We have 2 HP Managed switches HP2524, the rest of the swicthes are Linksys wich are great even more so now that Linksys is a sub division of cisco. £200 for an unmanaged full gig switch is not bad.

CyberNerd Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 Cisco if you can afford it, HP are also very good quality but I'd recommend 3com 3226 (24 port with 2 uplink) They are layer 3 switches (if you need to VLAN) and have tonnes of features. I think they about £240 from misco and can take 2 fibre modules. Sadly they don't use syslog service so remote can only be done with the web interface or we use Cacti to monitor SNMP
