witch Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 We have a God's Blessing Lane which is sweet, and an Avenue Road which is just weird
tom_newton Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I live on a road with "crescent" in the name that's perfectly straight, so I make a habit of spotting such oxymoron roads
elsiegee40 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Near me is Dry Hill Park Road which sounds like they bunged together all the words they could think of.
BKGarry Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Near me is Thong Lane (in fact the secondary school I went to is on it), it gets it name from the fact there is a tiny hamlet at the end (of about 10 farm houses) called (you guessed it) Thong.
Oaktech Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 My Ex used to live in Happy Bottom. We also have a Crack Lane, a Melancholy Lane and a Shatters Hill...
enjay Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 There is a Water Road in Reading which isn't funny in itself, however it does amuse me that the Fire Station is on that road :-)
Oaktech Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Oooo... That reminds me. Broadstone Library is on Story Lane.
witch Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Oooo... That reminds me. Broadstone Library is on Story Lane. It is - I am visiting it this very day - strangely enough Poole has a "Barbers Piles" as well
sparkeh Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 (edited) Ahhh good to see 'Bell End' in Wollaston is on the list. Makes me chuckle every time I drive past it Edit: Just noticed 'Memory Lane' in Leicester, I drive past that church all the time and never saw the road name. Another little chuckle point on my journey Edit 2: Ok last edit, but the Father-in-Law lives on Water-Ma-Trout and yeah it makes me laugh too Edited August 15, 2013 by sparkeh
VeryPC Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 there used to be a good one in your neck of the woods conisborough been renamed but there used to be a butt hole road and where the south yorkshire police helicopter is/was is on lettsby avenue Yeah heard of Butt Hole Road before. The Police didn't end up on Letsby Avenue by mistake, it was a joke by the developer during the planning of a new road that stuck: Street name chimes with its station | UK news | The Guardian And I'm glad to see Long Line just outside Sheffield made it to the "conceptual" section. Guess what? It's a long straight road! Al
enjay Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 the Father-in-Law lives on Water-Ma-Trout and yeah it makes me laugh too There's a road called Whip Ma Whop Ma Gate in York. You have to wonder how such place names come about, don't you!
Dos_Box Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I's a shame they couldn't fit any of the very old lanes in our towns that began with the word 'Grope' in there. I think all have been renamed now and there is even a Wikipedia page on them! Interestingly they have mostly renamed to things like 'Grape Lane' and 'Union Lane'. BTW, this is true and I'm not being smutty here. It's an interesting part of our history
Dos_Box Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Oh, and there is an Electric Avenue in Harrogate
Oaktech Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 We have the Piddle Valley down here in Dorset, which has such gems as Piddlehinton and Piddletrenthide around it, but also Puddletown, which was renamed when Queen Victoria visited the area lest it offend her!
elsiegee40 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Oh, and there is an Electric Avenue in Harrogate I forgot about that one. I grew up in Harrogate
sonofsanta Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I drive past Labour-in-Vain Drove every morning, in Billinghay, Lincs. Bit depressing!
Dos_Box Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I forgot about that one. I grew up in Harrogate That's it! You're now officially known as 'Posh Geek'
elsiegee40 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 That's it! You're now officially known as 'Posh Geek' Living so close to Tunbridge Wells as I do now, there is no hope for me...
enjay Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Did anyone else see the Comic Relief thing a few years back, where the cast of The Inbetweeners went on a tour of rude place names? I think those were towns/villages, not streets though.
sonofsanta Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Not much else you can do... Turns out going into the West with the Elves was not as glamorous as Bilbo had hoped for...
