New School VPN solution

Hello All!!!!

 

I have a brand new school with a brand new infrastructure, Im starting to get together what the teachers will need and one of those is a Remote Access solution

 

Ive had a little look around but I curious too see what others are using

 

There will be a max of 40 staff that need remote access.

remote access from supplied laptops? if so use Microsoft Direct Access server 2012 using Win8 Enterprise. One SSL port required, no user interaction..

Going to deploy windows 7 enterprise not Win8 but yes it will be from supplied laptops or Personal Home devices

Windows 7 (Enterprise) works with Direct Access in Server 2012 as well - just need a Enterprise PKI setup (which isn't as hard as some people think) and you can deploy Direct Access and a SSTP VPN on the same server

Cool, I have heard of Direct Access didn't know which platforms it applied too, Thought it was just win8. seems that I might do the job.

HAP+ I was looking at that too, but if I am paying for Direct Access and It works then I might aswell use that, if not HAP+ was my next option. ive never set that up and looks to be a faf.

we are predominantly windows based network, but having said that I will be having a website run from my LAN so I could integrate HAP+

You could also use something like a barracuda SSL VPN, since its SSL your staff can simply connect to a website and have access to any resources you publish. Does the same stuff as you want, file shares, RDP etc etc

Remote desktop services is very handy. Gives them the same stuff at home as in school. Bonus is things like Sims and FMS run super fast as they are running within the school and only the image is sent over the internet. Again only one port (HTTPS) needed and once it is up and running it needs no real maintenance.

all depends what your staff want to use remotely. If they want to run SIMS etc then yer, go for terminal services as SIMS over any type of VPN would be shakey. However, if its just file access I find the easiest thing to use is just to setup a VPN server running windows server and use routing and remote access. When i setup the teacher laptops i just stick a shortcut on thier desktops to double click to connect to the vpn and save all details apart thier passwords. After its connected, their mapped network drives work! Easy!
