Why does 1 computer out of 9 behave differently :)

There I am, working away setting up 9 new teacher classroom Win7 machines - virtualising old XP ones to run inside of them so that they can use all ancient progs that we've lost the discs for - nice job for the half-term

 

Come to machine number 4 - plug a mouse into it - spends 5 mins searching for a driver (!!!!!) and then mouse doesn't work (it works fine on old XP machine and old mouse works fine on new machine)

 

Well -we gcan live with that one

 

Computer no 6 old virtualxp machine does a core dump when I try and attach an external USB drive to copy files from old virtual to new real one!!

 

Keeps us in jobs I suppose

In a suite of 18 identical PCs all with an identical image, I can guarantee that one will only pick up WSUS updates if it feels like it. All the others do it more or less simultaneously. I have never got to the bottom of why ICT-09 has a mind of its own.

I solved my issue with the one weird PC. Renamed LABB5 TO B2 and no longer have issues. True sorry.

Maybe we need to have a name and shame thread to attempt to embarrass these rogue machines into conforming. It's as likely to work as anything else that I have tried!

I have had similar problems with a bunch of Win 7 VMs running under HyperV, all imaged using MDT. When installing software using SCCM some work immediately, some don't.

I'm not saying that qualifications are necessary or a good thing - it is just that one teacher who I KNOW feels that I am "beneath" her might just behave differently (yes, not right I know) if she knew I had been to college. TBH anything for a quiet life.

When you say falling off, do you mean giving errors like 'the trust relationship between this computer and the primary domain has failed blah blah', or is it actually reverting to being in a workgroup?

We found that the main cause trust relationship errors here was a mismatch of DNS scavaging cycles and lease times, it also caused non-genuine windows errors through KMS

The odd thing is that we have the odd one fall off the domain here and there but this is CONSTANTLY this one machine which is why I cleaned up the DNS records - anything else I should do?

have you checked for a duplicate machine with the same name, that's 99% of the times we see laptops falling off domains. ( although usualy we have alternate staff comming in )

We found it was normally laptops, and checking back on Parago and SCCM there last check its were generally after the 4day lease time we have set (i dont know why its set at 4days) but DNS scavaging was set to 7days. So machines were being turned on saying "look here is my MAC address give me a new lease" and the server was reportgin back "you've already got one but I cant find it"

 

Other than forcing a DNS purge and matching up the lease times there isn't much that can be done from what i've read and been told by our senior techs.

Splitting our Wi-Fi across 2 VLANs helped having 1 scope for teacher wireless and 1 scope for student wireless and a seperate scope for "guest devices" alot of issues were caused by student devices (phones etc) latching onto to the student wifi and taking up addresses and stuff.

i suspect trust relationship is due to the user running the startup repair crap. Run this batch file (or manually) on their pc and hopefully it will stop
