CESIL Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 ...no prizes or anything but I will be interested to see what answers you guys come up with... I was called to look a problem with the computer attached to our hall projector and sound system and was told that the sound had gradually got quieter and then gone off completely. This was during a rehearsal for the year 6 production. So, I click on the volume icon and the volume is at minimum. I slide it back to max and sound is restored. I ask the pupil running the audio, "Did you change this?", "No" After listening to the music for a while I click on the volume icon again to show the pupil what was (I thought) wrong and the slider is now halfway down! I slide it back to the top and after a while check it again and it is now at the bottom! To cut a long story short I then looked for all sorts of reasons for this, including logging off and then back in a administrator and the problem remains that the volume control kept sliding back to zero, apparently on it's own! I did finally realise what was going on and it was not as I first suspected the work of a poltergeist. So, come on, guess what was the cause!

mac_shinobi Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Software running in the background like realtek that kept making it go lower as the realtek software was set at minimum level ? If recording type audio software then it automatically adjusted the volume level for microphone / audio so it didn't distort ? If not then what others have said ?

mac_shinobi Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I know Skype messes with volume levels. I had this with a piece of recording software like skype that kept adjusting the mic / recording volume levels constantly. Annoying

I thought of and tried the stuck key/mouse/software combos and had found nothing there... Then I had a thought and found that someone had put our PowerPoint remote back in it's lovely snug lycra case without turning it off and it has a volume control on the side. The pupil stood next to me was absent mindedly fiddling with the darn thing and moving the switch without realising it! 2
Alkaline Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Is it connected to a control panel (AMX PANEL etc) or something similar. That adjusts the volume in some cases, or maybe in the driver software it is set to automatically adjust the volume to keep it at a certain level.
