Bigs1312 Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I need to move to a new server (2008R2) and currently have SIMS installed on 2k3 with SQL 2008 R2. I've seen a few KB articles and grasp that i need to copy the SIMS folder then run SIMSINST (i've done it a while ago on a laptop for test purposes just using sql express) but what I would like is a step by step guide including the SQL 2008 R2 config followed by SIMS. I'm sure many of you will have done it before i was just hoping one of you had a good complete guide! Cheers Sam
winng Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 We are buying in the services of SBS as they have experience in performing this process and we don't. It also means it's one less thing to worry about...
chazzy2501 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 you build a new sims server then move the database. alter the connect.ini to point to the new server and on the clients alter their sims.ini with the new install path (for upgrades)
vikpaw Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 There are quite a lot of threads on the subject. Best to look at those . I would recommend asking for the installable ISO from your support team as setups folders can be very out of date, even if you update SIMS regularly.
Mcshammer_dj Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I have a doc I wrote for doing this if you want. Happy to send to you if you can PM me details.
Bigs1312 Posted July 2, 2013 Author Posted July 2, 2013 I think my problem may be with my setups folder as i,'m getting the error 'error assembly dznet does not exist, please run simssqlapplicationsetup.exe...' When I try to attach a DB. Even after running it I still great the error. Will try to get iso from support team if they'll give me it!!
Sylv3r Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Is their any reason why your looking to move to Server 2008 rather than 2012? Is may save you a job in 2 to 3 years time if you needed to upgrade again.
Bigs1312 Posted July 2, 2013 Author Posted July 2, 2013 Not really just that most of my other servers are on 2008. Is sims supported on 2012 and can I use SQL 2008 r2?
Dav3y Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Not really just that most of my other servers are on 2008. Is sims supported on 2012 and can I use SQL 2008 r2? I wouldn't bother with SQL2008 now as support will be ending and require a change to SQL2012 fairly shortly. The bad news is with SQL2012 that if you were using the per processor licensing model that Microsoft have now changed this to per core instead.
wingmanatl Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Not really just that most of my other servers are on 2008. Is sims supported on 2012 and can I use SQL 2008 r2? SIMS is supported on 2012. Just completed an install this afternoon.
vikpaw Posted July 6, 2013 Posted July 6, 2013 You can use SQL 2008 R2 and the latest release should have migration instructions to port to SQL 2012. I'd go for 2012 unless you want the backwards compatibility with the old system while you migrate.
