What RAM for Intel S5000VSA

I'm trying to extend the life of an ageing server but the RAM it recommends is expensive! Computer memory upgrades for Intel S5000VSA Motherboard from Crucial.com

 

The PDF on the Intel site only reccomends Fully Buffered ECC (Intel® Server Board S5000VSA — Tested memory list)

 

Can I get away with using cheaper unbuffered non ECC RAM?

The Intel® Server Board S5000VSA and Intel® Server System SR2520SA main memory sub-system was designed to support only Fully Buffered Dual In-line (FBD) Registered DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 FBDIMM memory ECC Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM).

if you goto RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, SSD at Crucial.com/uk and download and install the memory advisor tool it will tell you exactly what it can take. Your free then to get it where ever you want but crucial is a good brand.

For DDR and DDR2 (especially in servers) I just use Ebay. Depending on the amount of RAM you need, it can be very productive - I picked up 8GB of ECC DDR for about £30, and got some 2GB sticks of FB-DIMM DDR2 for about £5 each. All still in use now.

What quantity are you looking for? There's 8 slots on that board if I recall.

I went with 2x 2Gb sticks in the end (8Gb in total) just extending its life a bit so didn't want to splash out too much.
