Hi Guys,

For the last few days, we have had a couple of users report pop-ups asking for them to enter usernames and passwords to use email. If they cancel the box or ignore it, everything still works as it should. If they enter the details, its still pops back up at random intervals. The users are not doing anything specific to trigger this although it does seem to happen more often when using the Send and Save feature in office applications.

Any suggestions? Proxy exceptions are in IE for our domain, Hotfix KB2553248 & KB 2553406 have been removed (google search suggests this) without luck.

Users receive this warning:

Many thanks

Thanks, I forgot to say we run online mode as users were complaining cache mode was too slow as they move machines on a regular basis.

The PC is displaying 'Online with Microsoft Exchange' when this pop-up comes up.

Ours have the "online with microsoft exchange" message, but they also have "all folders are up to date" if the cache mode is enabled.

Step 1: check your Autodiscover settings for anything unusual, just in case - hold down Ctrl on the keyboard when you right-click on it and select Test E-mail AutoConfiguration...

Step 2: Check Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager for any saved passwords relating to your Exchange server. If you are authenticating using domain credentials you should not need credentials saved in there.

Seem to recall that this worked a couple of years ago on older outlook

Close all the programs

Click Start -> Run

Enter "Regedit" and Click "Ok"

Locate the folder : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Edit Menu-> New-> Expandable String Value

Name it as "AppData"

Double click new entry and write "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data" in "Value data field" box.

Click "OK" and Close the registry editor.

Please remember to make a backup first.

Never fixed this, but pretty sure it, for us is caused by network connection interruption and outlook failing over between internal direct access and HTTP RPC, with a side helping of not having kerberos configured via the web publishing service (TMG for us).

Also, staff have a tendency to enter their EMAIL address in the username box. If the user types their proper windows username and password, and click the remember the password box, it stops being a problem.

Are the accounts locked out when it happens?

I agree with FN-GM, this is one of the most common reasons or indeed network connectivity issues.

Users are typing their network username / password, I watched them do it, yet the pop up still comes back.

Going to try wilsons registry tweak and if not, move the pcs in question to a different switch to see if network connectivity is an issue although they have not complained of losing any services other than the pop-up

One of the two users with this problem had an entry under 'Generic Credentials' relating to outlook, I have deleted this entry and asked him to keep us posted.

The other one gets prompted to login everytime he uses the 'Save and Send' feature in any of the Office 2010 products (word, excel, powerpoint) and then an error saying the server is offline, retry or work offline.

Any ideas how to correct this?

The pop-up is still coming up for the same users and it is also cropping up for a few more users now too.

I have tried changing the PC's they use to a different switch, deleting the mail account and recreating it on their user, deleting any settings in the credential manager relating to outlook, turned Protected Mode in IE off, rebooted exchange.

Still the messages pop up for a handful of users.

Ive had this issue before with a couple of users.

Best way to overcome this is to just rebuild the appdata (if that doesnt cause too many issues)

if it does then i believe if you delete all the protect folder from appdata it should force it to work again.

%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect

Then start up outlook, type in the the username and password and it will work again. :)

We were / are getting this too but I haven't fully troubleshooted why. Creating a new outlook profile seemed to fix the problem which presented itself firstly when we forced the password changes at the beginning of term for staff.

Entering their credentials didnt work fully until they entered domain\username with their password, but again it was inconsistent as some went away after they entered their credentials, others it kept coming back.

Upgrading to 2013 seemed to fix the problem on a couple I tested too.

Ill dig up my old thread hold on.

Our problem is strange, only currently effecting 4 users, it doesn't come up straight away when opening outlook, it just comes up at random point during the day. User enters their password and it goes away again for a few hours before returning. On average coming up about 4 times a day.

I will give the hotfix a go and report back. If that doesn't work, I will delete the users app data folder or give them a new profile and see how they get on with that.

A bit of an old thread drag-up, but we've been experiencing issues similar to this if not the same. Is everyone still suffering or does anyone know a miraculous solution?

Just to add, since the summer Outlook has become more sensitive to disconnections. For example if I am on wifi and wired and I pull the wired connection, Outlook freaks out and up comes the login box even though I can still access everything else on wifi.
