well that's it! I think I'll be a PS fanboy now. The only part of tat which caught my attention was "cloud based persistent worlds" - sounds interesting. Oh and they used Hyper-V.

 

At least Sony had the good sense to show us some in game footage!

 

Also I think Sony have a problem, I think the PS4 is using the same case as the XBOX ONE (I hate that name) - how will we tell them apart??

Watching delayed and got the COD video info. I love the way the dev was so excited about the ability to lean in game!

I suspect COD: Ghost will still be on 360/PS3 as well, which will limit what they can do with one engine. It'll pick up, probably quicker than normal with the x86 architecture - there's no learning curve for the peculiarities of the system now, just the time to get a new engine up to speed (and Unreal 4 / CryEngine 3 are pretty much good to go, and already gorgeous on PC in the case of the latter).

PS3 and Wii were both "always on" in that regard. Well, they want to be. Not a lot they can do when I turn them off at the socket. MWAH HA HAH.

 

The PS3 always gets the final laugh with its goddamn system updates though. I hate the PS3. Hate it. NetFlix worked yesterday, why won't it work today until I update? Oh right, because the PS3 hates me back. GRR.

Lots of bitching about the Xbox One, not surprising. The biggest whinge about the reveal keynote was the time spent on the TV facilities. Forgetting it may or may not work outside the US, if you think your games console should exist, you're wrong. Games consoles should have ceased to exist 3 or 4 years ago, but because people are happy to keep thrusting cash into the wallets of Nintendo/Sony/MS, they'll keep feeding them crap. People don't even know what they want any more, they wait until someone tells them what they want.

The death of the dedicated console has been delayed so long that they've turned into single purpose PCs and are now neck and neck with the PC for the "single entertainment and work device". That however should have been the case half a decade ago. MS are making a step forward with the combined system they're aiming for but if it works or not, only time will tell.

 

Also there's some key points to remember.

The PC and mobile gaming industry is *far* bigger than all 3 consoles put together thanks to casual games. I do wonder if Nintendo were barking up the right tree but with really bad execution on the Wii-U. Wii's flew off the shelves by making the casual gaming market more accessible.

PS3 should in theory have been so much better than anything else but held back by being overcomplicated.

Xbox360 won out in the end by combining it all for a far better cost than the PS3.

 

With cost being an amusing factor in this generation, I'll be thoroughly looking forward to seeing how this round pans out. It's interesting being absolutely unbiased in this!

I think there are bigger questions to be asked.

 

Microsoft are in serious trouble, they have been for quite a while now and this shambles of a press conference hasn't helped any. If I was a shareholder I'd be baying for blood right now!

 

They have singularly failed to establish any kind of presence in the ultra important tablet and mobile phone markets. Bing and Office365 continue to struggle against Google and Yahoo. IE's market share is falling ( Browser Statistics). Windows 8 has alienated their core corporate market. And now this...

After sitting through both this and the earlier PS4 announcement, all I can say is that I'm glad I don't own a console. I will continue to maintain my PC for all my computing needs.

It depends on how selectively you use your figures. In 2004 Microsoft had 23% of the smartphone marketshare. Getting 3.5% marketshare in 2013 isn't too good.

You're not wrong. I looked at their division profits a little while ago and it worked out at something like 3/4 of all profit came from their business division - a.k.a. the Office and server division.

MS should decouple Office from the rest of the company and it would make even more money.

I couldn't imagine a scenario where a non-MS company wouldn't sell office for the majority of platforms - ie unix based telephones and tablets.
