It's supposed to be a GAMES CONSOLE not a tv tuner. [All I've heard so far is TV, TV, TV.]

 

Oh look games... Sports, sports, more sports and a cutscene with cars.

 

Oh wait... Back to TV.

 

Halo... TV series... wut. Get your priorities straight.

 

Oh, A PREMIUM TV series. Stay classy Microsoft. ;)

 

And back to sports...

... the next-generation Xbox will run three operating systems simultaneously. Complementing Windows 8 and RT on PCs and tablets, there'll be a third distinct version of Microsoft's operating system that has been pared down specifically for the new console. This will be the main system OS used to run apps such as Skype and other non-game titles downloaded from the Xbox storefront. At the same time, virtualization technology similar to Microsoft's Hyper-V will be used to allocate the bulk of system resources to a second, dedicated "Xbox OS" when the user loads up a game. This game OS will remain a fixed entity throughout the life of the console, so that game developers can be confident their games will run regardless of how much the Windows side of the machine gets updated. Finally, a third OS will work as a middle-man between the two, allowing the two sides of the console to talk to each other. (Source)

 

... and as expected it will not be backwards compatible.

Technologically speaking, it's not wholly a surprise that backwards compatibility is off the table. Today, the company confirmed months of rumors that the new Xbox would use an x86 CPU. Games designed for the Xbox 360's Xenon processor simply won't run natively on the new hardware, since the Xenon used a PowerPC architecture instead. Of course, Sony's PlayStation 4 has the same problem: Sony also chose to move to x86 from PowerPC, and the PS4 also won't directly support PS3 games.

 

But while Sony is promising that PlayStation 4 users will indeed be able to play PlayStation 3 games at some point, by streaming them from the cloud, Microsoft is not promising any such thing for Xbox One. When we specifically asked Whitten whether the company had any streaming option or download option for existing Xbox 360 games for the Xbox One, he confirmed that there was no such thing in the works at Microsoft.

 

Microsoft does, however, plan to keep selling the Xbox 360 alongside the new console for the foreseeable future. "This isn't about getting rid of the Xbox 360," Whitten said. Perhaps the lack of backwards compatibility will be good for business there. (Source)

 

It looks like you won't be able to lend game discs to your friends. :(

 

Microsoft's Xbox One will use Blu-ray discs for games, but you won't be using them as frequently as you might have with your PlayStation 3. In a statement made to Wired, Microsoft said that all games are installed to the Xbox One's hard drive to play; you won't have to insert the disc to run the game after that initial process.

 

Prior to the Xbox One's official unveiling, rumors had flown for months that Microsoft's latest console would contain a mechanism to block used games. While Microsoft has so far stayed quiet on this particular point, the mandatory installation would seem to suggest that it may well be the case — at least to a certain extent.

 

Microsoft has said that a fee would be charged for any game disc to be tied to a second Xbox Live account following its initial installation. This is likely to limit the market for second-hand games, but would not eliminate the possibility altogether. The company is yet to confirm whether players will be able to play games from the disc or run them on secondary accounts without paying for the installation, nor has it given any indication of what the fee may be. Yeah, that was a lame announcement. Sony's was better, they actually had games.

Xbox One - Only one was sold.

Xbox One - The one console to make you a PC gamer.

Sony had games. This looked rushed.

 

Plus, this was focused on ONE thing. TV. [At least from what I saw.]

 

 

Also, and everyone seems to have forgotten this, IT'S A GAMES CONSOLE. It's pointless without games.

The 80s VCR was what I thought of as well. I reckon the new controller looks comfortable though.

 

I am pleased about the 8gb of RAM, with both consoles having that much it should allow games to really push their level design. The PC will be able to stretch its legs at last :)

 

I know there was no mention of CPU speed, but was there any talk on GPU spec?

 

Xbox One though? That's just asking for eBay scams :(

If you look at the picture of the console with the Kinect, it's obvious what they're actually aiming for - Metro.

 

As if there hadn't been enough hate spewed about the Windows 8 interface, let's design the Xbox that'll sit in your front room for the next 8 years to look like it too! I'm sure this design style will never go out of fashion.
