Apple TV - Getting audio

In one of the schools I am currently supporting they have bought an Apple TV to test, I'm currently setting it up but have immediately realised that there is no sound because the Apple TV has a HDMI output only and connects straight to a projector, now this projector has no built in speakers OR any sound port outputs. There is an optical out port on the back of the apple TV but i'm struggling to find any adapters.

 

Anyone had this issue and found a good solution?

I think it might be cheaper to purchase through RM I'm not sure. Hope that helps

They currently run it in 1 class but with the scope that they MIGHT get one in every room depending on how well they work. This looks like the most reasonable option for 12+ rooms.

VGA is currently being phased out so be careful in investing in those adaptors. In a few years time you might not be able to get projectors with VGA so you will then need another adaptor.

Yes, but in a few years time Apple will have changed their equipment 15 times in the interim. Projectors will have VGA for a while yet.

We use a number of appleTV's in our school and have hit upon the same issues.

We take the optical out of the apple tv and put it through and optical to rca converter (about 30 quid) and feed this to an amplifier that is in the room.

Check Ebay for optical to RCA converters ... I bought mine from there ... from memory about £15.00 each

You know you can get optical audio to mini jack converters for about £5, we got from free with some of those tiny Asus computers (eeebox i think).
