Koldov Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Just out of interest, how many times have you either: 1) Missed out on pressing Del, F12, F8, F6 or some other vital start-up button combination because you were distracted and had to let the OS kick in before you rebooted to do what you wanted.... And then missed it again because it was too quick or you were distracted again (damn you xkcd)! 2) Left something updating or deleting, only to come back hours later and realise it had probably stalled minutes after you left due to it asking 'if you are really, really, really sure you want to do this' or something along those lines... (my fave is a service pack that installs IE or something near the beginning which you have to accept seperately), or a read-only, or system file (thumbs.db I hate you...) that requires user interaction to delete! 3) Clicked to install something and left it to run whilst working on something else, only to realise it needed some other confirmation but it's pop-up box didn't capture the focus of the window and it's sitting behind another window (and gently flashing on the taskbar)!!! I'm sure there are others... Kol

Especially 1 on a bunch of Acer netbooks I've been working on, I get about a 2-4 second window and It usually takes me about 10-15 seconds to remember what I was supposed to do when they start to power back up. I don't miss hitting the keys at the right time because usually I button mash from the second I boot the machine so it's hard to miss it really. Mostly I'm guilty of doing 2 and 3 on my home systems. Work stuff tends to keep focus a bit better. That being said, large file downloads like ISOs tend to be distraction traps. Edited March 26, 2013 by AMLinington

I do that too... mostly because the computers here don't say which button they need. It's a mixture of F2, ESC, DEL F8 and F12 [F12 is PxE] so I just cycle through them quickly. Oh, I think we have a random one with F4 as well.
