andy_nic Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I just passed a car going to work to see a driver with snow all over his front window screen with only a 20 by 10 cm gap made to look out of. looked like a giant snow ball was coming at me.

I was stuck at home scraping off the snow & ice for a good 30 mins, even with de-icer! I do agree though, it's stupid to drive with a tiny bit of vision. Should be given points. unixman_again Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 It took me 10 minutes to sweep 15cm of snow off my car this morning. I use a soft broom. I find it amazing that we get a bit of snow and drivers immediately forget how to park in the bays at the railway station. It's pretty easy for the first car to line up with the kerb, and the rest of the cars to line up with the one next to it.

My handy scraper-offer device is in the boot. No problem. Key in, turn, lift open. LLLLLIFT open. Ok, maybe not. Both hands and ALL my strength and I could not open this boot. That means the weight of that snow on the boot and a little from the back windscreen must have been a hell of a weight - probably equal to a passenger. More passengers/weight you have, higher fuel consumption and running costs, higher wear. Fuel costs are bad enough as it is!

Not to mention falling off behind you (or to the side in the case of corners) and hitting other driver's windscreens - thus potentially causing accidents there...

Danp Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 At night fill a 2 litre bottle of water with some screen wash in it. Leave in house with lid off. In the morning, brush the worse of the snow off the car and pour said water over the glasswork and stick wipers on, job done.

LeBoyfriend has an Astra so we fill 3 or 4 4-pint milk bottles with cold water then stand them in the hall against the radiator - they get vaguely lukewarmish when the rads come on at 5am and we found this quite effective at clearing the windscreen. For the record, my windscreen clearing process was tongue in cheek - I don't have heated side windows or anything so lights, windows and wing mirrors still need clearing, although the warmish water does that quite well and the two hardest screens are a doddle with heated front and rear.
jmak Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Our cars go in the garage I know not everyone has a garage, but always amazes me how many people do, but still leave their cars outside. It still makes me happy every time I don't have to clear a car in the morning. There are potential pitfalls: I got a text from OH at work on Friday "I think I may have nudged the garage door this morning. Sorry." Wasn't really a surprise - I'd seen the garage door...
