CAM Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Problem with cross-platform is that PC/Console is a no due to control issues with MK whooping controller any day. PS/XBox is a no due to MS greediness (I place the blame on MS because PS have offered co-op cross play with PC in the past with Portal 2 showing willingness to open up their network).
Hefferzzzz Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 So surely a PC with a decent small SSD to boot from and decent cooling matched up to your big HD TV with wireless kbrd/mouse is the better option in terms of all round game/surfing/entertainment/game longevity??
tmcd35 Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 @sonofsanta, I agree with entirely. This time out it's been harder for console manufacturers to push the boat out in terms of spec vs. PC. But it doesn't mean what Sony are offering is in any way under spec'd. I just think because they have used an x86 processor it's made it all too easy for people to, sometimes incorrectly, compare the next gen consoles to regular PC's. I've no doubt though that PC's will "catch up" within the next year, and eclipse shortly after. PCs can do GPGPU computing now - CUDA and OpenCL, PhysX is an (unfortunately vendor limited) implementation of that. I don't know if we'll ever get the unified RAM; I know PC's have done GPGPU computing for a long time now. Whats different in both consoles I believe (but definitely in PS4) is that they can run graphics calculations in parallel with GPGPU calculations where as existing PC GPU's do the calculation serially so have to (very quickly) task switch between the two types of calculation. That said it wouldn't surprise me if AMD's 7900 series already supports parallel GPGPU calculations as I believe they are based on the same GCN cores. As for unified RAM, AMD have already announced it for the next APU updates next year. So yes, this time next year you'll be able to build a PS4 for a little more than buying Sony's. So surely a PC with a decent small SSD to boot from and decent cooling matched up to your big HD TV with wireless kbrd/mouse is the better option in terms of all round game/surfing/entertainment/game longevity?? Obviously depends on the gaming experience you are after. For me the answer is no! Not least because I really don't want to have to deal with Windows. I suppose you can set up Steam's 10ft interface as the default shell, but still - driver update, windows updates, anti-virus, keyboards, mice, yueck. Give me a console any day!
mac_shinobi Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 @tmcd35 - looks like another console then. Wish they would bring out a 4K HD 3D tv !!!
Arthur Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 <3 gotta love that its no DRM That's only partly true. After pledging support for used games, Sony's Jack Tretton says publishers can enforce DRM Less than 24 hours ago, Sony Computer Entertainment of America president Jack Tretton was met with uproarious applause after revealing that PlayStation 4 disc-based games can be freely given to friends and purchased on the used market. "PlayStation 4 won't impose any new restrictions on used games," were his exact words. One day later, that message is already mired in confusion. During an interview with Game Trailers, Tretton reiterated that Sony's first-party releases won't carry any unordinary DRM restrictions, only to later clarify that third-party publishers like Electronic Arts and Activision are free to chart their own course.

I am hoping that they bring out a similar APU but using the Piledriver modules instead of the Jaguar cores - that'd be an incredible Steam box then.

That said Sony have form for using BSD in their products, apparantly. That being the case, it'll be a good thing. Better than running a version of Windows at any rate...

Arthur Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Foxconn using forced student labour to build Sony’s PS4 « Games In Asia If reports in the Chinese press are to be believed, Sony’s next-gen games console may be being assembled using some very outdated labor practices. According to Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily, thousands of students from an IT engineering program at the Xi’an Institute of Technology are being forced to work at Foxconn’s Yantai plant assembling the Sony Playstation 4. Students have been told if they refuse to participate, they lose six course credits, which effectively means they will not be able to graduate. Officially, the program is considered an “internship” and it is publicly recognized and promoted by the school. But students have said that once they got to Foxconn, they were assigned to jobs that had no relation whatsoever to their fields of study, including grunt work like distribution and shipping. One student, for example, majored in finance and accounting but has been assigned to a job that entails glueing together parts of Sony’s Playstation 4. Another was assigned to a job that entails peeling of the PS4′s protective plastic and putting stickers on it. Still another, a computer science major, puts the PS4′s various cords and the instruction manual into the console’s box. Moreover, students say that their working hours are exactly the same as regular workers. The only difference is that unlike the workers, the students aren't being paid. ^ At least the students can add volunteer work to their CVs! That always looks good!

Arthur Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 PS4 will not support media servers, DLNA functionality « Polygon The PlayStation 4 will not support client functionality for media servers, Sony announced today in the Ultimate FAQ for the console on the PlayStation Blog. The FAQ also confirms the Sony's next-gen console will not support DLNA devices for sharing and streaming videos and other media content from a home PC. Sony's PlayStation 3 does include DLNA support and allows users to access their PC's media from the console's dashboard. Earlier this year, Microsoft noted that the Xbox One will not work as a Windows Media Center Extender, which would have allowed users to connect multiple devices running Windows. DLNA support, while possible on the Xbox 360, is still unconfirmed for the Xbox One. PS4 won't support CD or MP3 playback at launch « Polygon PlayStation 4 owners will have limited music listening options when the console launches next month, as Sony has confirmed that the next-gen console doesn't support playback of music CDs and MP3s. Sony suggests that if PS4 owners want to play background music while playing games, they should get a Music Unlimited subscription — apparently their only option, based on a FAQ posted to the PlayStation Blog today. Music Unlimited subscriptions range from $4.99 to $9.99 depending on the number and type of devices subscribers own. The PS4 will not include a music visualizer like its predecessor. Some of those features (or lack thereof) may change. On Twitter, president of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said, "Thanks for the feedback to the lack of MP3 and DLNA support at the launch of PS4. I'll share with the PS4 Dev team for future consideration."

The lack of DNLA or well it being used for your own media is a big failure by sony. Its all for the love of drm....

ZeroHour Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Xbox had it first for years so I would expect it if the console is any kind of media hub. Obviously the ps4 is not, but you can pay to stream songs you own in true Sony fashion.
Theblacksheep Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 (edited) Xbox had it first for years so I would expect it if the console is any kind of media hub. Obviously the ps4 is not, but you can pay to stream songs you own in true Sony fashion. Media Extender isn't supported on xboxone. Mr Nelson didn't know if DLNA or MP3 was supported on xboxone. With a couple of weeks to go as head of PR I'd expect him to know. MS have been playing dumb on rumours surrounding contentious issues, 720p because of poor GPU being the main one. From analysis of cross-platform games like BF4 (900p vs 720p) and COD (1080p vs 720p) this has so far turned out to be true. Consoles are for games right? You may be expecting/assuming too much. Still, at least you'll be able to pay for streaming services too. \o/ Edited October 31, 2013 by Theblacksheep
