In case you are interested, we have just had some eggs delivered to school that will hopefully start to hatch either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.

It's fairly low quality, but does the job.

 

Tech Spec - Stone i5 Laptop, Hue Webcam, OBSProject to send the stream to YouTube and record.

Eggs, you say?

 

 

I hope you have video capture set up in case you miss it! It would be a bummer to clock off for the night, come back in the next day and find them all chirping away.

Which brings up the point: Why is there nothing in the box for when they hatch? Should there not be some hay or something? (Legit question, I don't actually know, but it just feels like there ought to be if it's left "unmanned".)

It's all fun and games until you have to slit a chicken's neck because it's the holidays and the science teacher is off and the caretaker has grown too attached to it...

Regards nothing in the incubator, I don't know to be honest. The chap who just dropped them off said that's how they are and that's kind of it. Don't they eat the shell once they are born for their first food?

 

I've got 5 chickens myself and wanted to go on a course to learn how to properly despatch and prepare them but the wife wouldn't allow it...

Having hatched, raised, processed and eaten quail...

 

you don't have anything in the incubator because germs can be transferred through the shells and kill the unborn chick. Once they hatch they stay in the incubator for 24hrs to dry out. During this time they live off their yolk sacs.

 

@Tricky_Dicky I was part of a forum... backyardchickens.com - they will probably be able to offer advice re: eating chickens.

This is also a technical exercise to see how long a YouTube live stream stays up for.

 

Depends a bit how you're doing it. If you're doing it using Google Hangouts On Air, the limit is 8 hours, and the recording will be available to watch through your YouTube account once the stream ends.

If you're using the Online Beta, it will stream indefinitely, or more likely until the stream is interrupted. Once you stop the stream the last 12 hours of content is available as a standalone YouTube video. I had to do the exact same thing for the same reasons last week!

Using the Online Beta. I'm hoping it will stay connected for quite a while then. It does seem to be hammering our upload connection though which I wasn't expecting.

Need to remember to watch this tomorrow and wednesday! Hatching eggs is well egg-citing.

 

I was wondering when the puns would start. That one is Eggcelent though...

Ours just went back last week, we had 7 hatch in one day and then over 24 hours before the last 3 hatched, we were at the point of checking what we should do if they don't hatch. Edited by GuyJD
