Side note guys, you can use the registry instead of the ini file. So just use the gpo to deliver the msi and set the appropriate registry entries.

Lost another 7 in the last session, this time to the issue we patched this morning, sadly the problem occurs during session one and that ran yesterday, before the patch came out, nice one...

Yesterday 4x software lockup 2x software crash Today 1x software lockup 2x software crash 2x pupil test being automatically completed before they are even presented with the instructions screen where they can press proceed... solution, student just failed, live with it.

The exam boards' defence will be that all they require of students is to use word processors and spreadsheets, 99.9% of schools decide to use MS Word and Excel for these tasks, but there's nothing saying that they we HAVE to use MS. They (allegedly) use vendor-independent phrases although it is very clear which application they had in mind. DiDA... Admittedly slightly off track, but you are required to use certain software

I've tried both tagging and untagging, but the same effect. I too had read that cisco default vlan cannot carry tagged data, but it offers me the command:- set dot1q-all-tagged enable Which returns:- Packets on Native vlan will be tagged. Which seems to suggest otherwise, anyway, I tried both already

So I have a Procurve (HP) network with 3 vlans, Curric, Admin and Videoconferencing. This covers the school nicely and I don't think needs much explaining. Prodived by County to connect to the internet I have a cisco router and switch with 24 ports. These have 4 vlans, Curric, Admin, We-learn and videoconferencing On the county Cisco switch Port 1 is connected to the router, ports 2-10 are Curric, 11-16 are VC, 17-22 are Admin and 23 & 24 are We-learn. From the county cisco switch I have a single connection from a port on the curric, admin and VC vlans into one of the Procurve switches. The ports on the procurve are set as untagged and to the correct vlan for each. The various Procurves are connected by tagged connections (trunks for you cisco bods) and all work fine, they can connect to the county cisco on whatever vlan they are set to and then to the outside world. So everything works fine. As you may have guessed I have no control over the county ciscos, hence I haven't simply trunked from the cisco to the procurves. So I'm happy, everything works and its a lovely vlan setup so I can change things around real easy. Now here is where things start to go wrong... I've been given 2 48+2Gbit port Cisco Catalyst 2948G switches. They are pretty old, but they do work and it seems a terrible waste not to use em. So I set one of them up to take a trunked/tagged connection from a Procurve. Set the vlans up to match the procurves, set dot1q-all-tagged so that even the native defafult vlan 1 is tagged and set the vtp to transparent. Plug in to the procurve, takes it sweet time but before too long I can connect machines to it and they dhcp and can ping about the place on whatever vlan I set their port to. For the Admin and VC vlans, 2 and 4 are the IDs, I can reach the county cisco and get to the outside world. However , for the Curric vlan (ID 1) I cannot reach the county cisco and worse still the port on the county cisco connected to my procurve shuts down and no one on the curric vlan can talk to the county cisco or get to the outside world, even those that previously could before I connected my cisco switch. Now the first time I connected I got an error message coming up on the county cisco (I can at least connect to the console and see the error messages ) complained about SPANTREE-7-RECV_1Q_NON_TRUNK: Received 802.1q BPDU on a non trunk FastEthernet 0/18 VLAN 3. So this was picking up a spantree message on the admin port connected to my procurve. It gave the same spantree message some other ports and blocked each port. So I turned off spantree on my cisco and the county cisco stopped complaining and unblocked the ports... even told me it was unblocking them So here I am, the admin and VC vlans are fine, but the curric one doesn't work. On the very slim chance anyone has come across something like this before, could you tell me where I'm going wrong? Thanks

Hi all, I'm in a situation where I need to allow pupils to search for files. (Don't go there, just accept it and cry like I do) The problem I have is that turning this on allows them to search for users in the AD too. I would like to be able to do one of 3 things. First pref would be to allow only file searching. Second pref would be to allow them to search as now, but prevent them viewing anything but the user list Third option would be to prevent them changing the AD info for their phone number, web information and a couple of other items that by default users are allowed to change for themselves. Assuming I don't get 1 or 2 I have been working on 3. I can set the permissions for a single user object so that they can't change phone number, etc... as the option is visible and tick in the security display for the user object. What I can't find a way to be is to apply a deny option for a whole OU for a security group the pupils are in as I cannot get the security option to display for what I want to deny on anything but a user object! Can anyone help please. Or for that matter does anyone even understand all that waffle Thanks

We have a policy that you are responsible for the machine you are logged into, be you teacher or pupil. Depending on the teacher, make em sweat over what the school might do, enough that they definately make the child in question regret it... Same works for kids using other kids accounts and doing something wrong, we give ppl passwords for a reason, if they don't keep the computer or password secure its on their head.

Check the local GPO permissions for what access level is required to do a remote shutdown/reboot. At my old place they hadn't got this set right and one little %^&* found out and would randomly reboot/shutdown computers. (You can set it so no message is displayed) Also, if its a script (one after the other sounds that way) it could still be the same command. And now for darker view... check your servers/tech machines for schedueled scripts... Have you had anyone leave recently?

My latest "different" thing is something I stumbled across by accident... I was connecting a bluetooth device (can you guess what?) to my work PC. I'd had a bluetooth dongle for ages and never installed it. So when I was looking for the device half a dozen phones showed up, some with the name of the owner... We have a no phone policy here (or you have to hand them in at the start of the day) so having a phone on you and worse still turned on (Can't pickup bluetooth when its off!) is a big no no. So now the office has a rather large collection of phones that they'll be keeping until Easter and the kids have reaffirmed their hatred of me. Now I don't expect this to continue, they will learn and bluetooth will get turned off, but it reminds them we're watching This also worked out better than the mobile detectors we had been looking into as they only work when the phone is sending and receiving! Oh, finally, when they start complaining this was an invasion of privacy, remember its it their phone broadcasting the bluetooth ID and while bluetooth and WiFi operate very differently on the same frequency I know for sure they don't understand that so you can blame their bluetooth phones for poor WiFi signals!! I'm not evil IRL, but it is in the job description.

linkd.exe is part of one of the microsoft admin packs It works with redirected desktop as the shortcut is the same no matter the machine, therefore, no complicated working out which office version is installed on a machine each time.

The sample pic shortcut keeps getting recreated, We took the approach of blocking all .url files using spaceguard and running a script to delete all existing .url in user areas to catch the ones already created. Oh yes, to prevent other breaches, shortcuts/executables/etc can only be launched from certain locations, so bringing in shortcuts on memory sticks/cds won't help them.

I get our volume licensing from Insight. When I signed up I was sent every CD/DVD possible to buy a license for and 4 pretty cases for them to go in direct from Microsoft. This year when I renewed the agreement they sent the same stuff out again and throughout the year I receive new CD/DVDs as they release updates... Its a lot damn better than the more expensive licenses I bought from County b4 and the £25 per disc I wanted!
