Might be worth checking out the Samba Wiki! https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Setting_up_a_Share_Using_Windows_ACLs Read it exact, should get you though =)

Just my 5p worth of data here. In sense of Hardware, I have not encountered much issues with majority of hardware, apart from nvidia now and again. Just remember, the more "newish" your parts are, more likely something "could" not work - till a driver set is released or alike. But 9/10 the big companies like AMD/Intel/Nvidia tend to chuck out good drivers quickly anyway. Plus, helps to have a distro that is more upfront with new changes like fedora and Manjaro. Just remember the timing of versions of packages in every different distro is based on the package maintainer of each distro, so its a hit or miss on how long driver packages pop. Terms of Distros that myself have used for gaming; For a Debian style Distro - Pop!_OS, clean, fairly up to date with kit, less bloat i feel out of the box - and gaming I feel had no real negative effects. Plus the APT / Debian community is rather large, so getting support is quite easy. For an Arch Distro, Manjaro - found it great for many of my friends that needed a NIX System for gaming, upto date drivers, and the AUR is a wonderful tool. I did find gaming on Manjaro was great - plus if you check videos from "linus Tech tips" they had some great videos explaining the whole process. To be fair, i think whatever Distro/HW route you take, it be a fun endeavor - and plus learning how NIX works to get it around a standard you want - is half the fun in my books =)

Looking for a VDI or Application hosting service
Xellpnz replied to Xellpnz's topic in Cloud Services
Issue is that they make it a darn slight easier to host and manage than doing it yourself. Been playing around with Azure and doing remote apps, costing nearly the same for hosting to be fair! Cameyo also have huge discounts for EDU and more users you have, so might tend up being cheaper than that! -
Looking for a VDI or Application hosting service

Check out; Cameyo Itopia Vmware Airwatch - (need a parter to supply) All 3 have great SaaS Deployment - for example cameyo allows you to create weblinks to applications, and just add them via GSuite to what ever users bookmarks, and bam, they can access it using the Google Gsuite Authication, or Azure AD Systems. Itopia and Vmware have something alike, included the intergrated one sign on system. Give them a shout, VMWare was damn impressive and even came out to see our networks and how we are going to handle all the networking! -

Aye, looking at hosting that offsite or redirect the clients to a server in house. -
Afternoon all, Just a quick rundown, we are a windows domain going Chromebooks for everyone - we want to be able to run legacy applications (SIM's being the big bugbear) Having alook around at VDI and application hosters on the cloud, any reconmendations? Is a VDI better than hosting pure apps? Any suggestions and ideas, and company names the better! Cheers =)

If theres no real "requirement" other than, common sense, play when you can, support each other etc etc, then im game. Half reason i never played it as i never had real time, and some elitish snobs. But be nice to be able to casualy play on lunch, or after work for a hour or so here and there, get involed and have a giggle =)

Pining directly off site from my home via vpn -> to the file-server works fine, just not when logged into a clients desktop, with VPN and attempting to access the files. Tried on two accounts, "Testers" and gave same issue. Il give a conditional a go later, should of thought of that! I shall look into that! After all that looking, never even seen this. They arnt advertising it much are they? =P

Afternoon folks, This might take some time to explain, so please bear with me! Or - TLDR: Folder redirection + smoothwall vpn = noworky, how to worky, or better? Moving on' Im a system admin at a muti site PRU, with off site staff that travel around. Way back when (past two years), we had Roaming profiles, but due to size of profiles (120gb for some), network usage, login loads, generic slow downs, just became a slow race for someone to slap IT around the head and say "oi what you playing at" Summer turned up; So we moved over to folder redirection and windows 10. Long story short for here, it works lovely. Staff accessing their files in a reasonable time, logins are smooth and crisp, and everyones happy..... apart from off site staff. I pushed for smooth-wall firewall to be installed over the summer (since we had none before......) which has been grand, and with their included VPN access, i believe it would solve off site users woes ten fold - oh how wrong i was. So accessing shared folders / SIMS's and other network based programs/DB's/folders has been fine to the most part, but folder redirection just wont work flat out. Checking upon google, and around 150 tabs later, it seemed i was not alone. From what i could tell (no exact straight answer) their folders where unable to be accessed due to the DNS not resolving the naming convention of the NAS (all users folders located there - Documents/downloads etc etc) So we have tried everything - Directing DNS settings on smoothwall to point to our DNS server - Removing AV to see if that was stopping anything - Adjusting our DNS server to what we could to attempt a fix, and alas, no luck. Il have to note here, i am the only IT tech/systemadmin at this site with no other support - or rarely at all - so i am always looking at making my job easier along the route. Anything that can make the users experience more seamless and borderline "easier" makes my day easier. Lately, amending the start menu just with shortcuts to EVERYTHING they require, meaning less confusion and upset for an example - custom background with details about the machine, and numbers to contact for IT support, etc etc etc. Plus we are placing 3 other sites onto my network over the next two years, and having a meshed network. So you can see how i would like everything to work for the end users, or my ticket system be broken after 5mins! So with this issue, i was wondering if i could somehow do one of the following; 1)Fix folder redirection over VPN clients - keep what we got, nothing new, just a fix. possible? 2)Using 365 Sharepoint's as a cloud based redirect to their folders (possible? Mirgration tool?) And then having it backed up to our local nas daily/Every save etc etc. Giving a lot of backups in case of worse case. Know it can be done using the onedrive pro app, and enforcing users to embrace with a small GUI tool, but can this be directed per user on that machine? 3)Work-folders? I herd this is mostly aimed at Single user per device, over multiple users one device - Seems the reg edits and setup focuses more on one user > One device (according to Microsoft techcommunity/ Microsoft doc's etc etc) . While that resolves our off-site staff, internal staff use mixture of desktops all over the site, and their own laptop. 4)Telling them to get over it, and just put files they need to work on to the desktop, and risk more slaps and abuse? I have been looking around the past few weeks, with what little downtime i get. But felt that maybe reaching for a hand here might be a better option. Have you guys managed folder-redirection over VPN? How did you get that resolved? Is it just smooth-wall that might be causing the issue. Are my other suggestions more worth while? Would AzureAD profiles help at all? or maybe moving to sharepoints? What would you suggested for End user experience. Any suggestions or idea's are really appreciated. And sorry if it sounds a mess, as i really feel like it today! think the weather is getting to me.... Cheers guys!

Good check would be steam. Browsing Level Editor That's the link to the steam store/ with the tags level editor. Would be a case of checking though and see what takes your interest. Most developers are more than willing to chat, you can give them a chat within the Community sections for each game. Some may even give you some copies for free due to being in education, just all depends on the devs. Hope that helps =)

In short, a whole rebuild software related (Rebuild DC/DNS/DHCP/Network arrangement/Network monitoring/Shared folder arrangement/etc etc) And some refresh on some old equipment, aka a few switches need replacing, some servers need updating. Its basically, someone to come in, give a hand re-do the whole network- software related, and some hardware related tasks, and get us back upto speed. I can do it personally, but solo work over the summer doing around 4 sites, multiple DC's, new GPO Structure, new File share structure, meshing all sites into one domain, and having it all talk is just a tad to much! Only thing we do not really need to do, is have new desktop/laptops and any AV. Just the internals that we need all redoing to a point. Sorry for the odd request, i tend to rebuild the network. But just with everything going on, just a tad lost and worried.

Afternoon everyone! Heading to the good old Bett show this year! be my second trip and can not wait. Got a solid question for the community though. We just became a muti-academy trust, and are looking at doing a whole network refresh. We have 3 sites, that we needed connected, rebuilt, and akin. Anyone know of any companies providing a one off build for us? Sadly the 3 of us are unable to re-do the whole network between the sites over the summer, and looking at a friendly bunch of lads and ladies to give us a hand solve this issue. We can handle the network, but rather just get it all done up, freshened up, and start from scratch. We can look after the network fine, just too much for our little brains to deal with in one summer! pop a message so we can have a natter at the bett show over what we are aiming to achieve. Thanks guys! P.S Hope this is the right place to ask! Sorry if not, just hard to find such a solution.

Hi guys and girls, Hopefully the right place to ask, if not sorry!! Myself and some other members of the IT Team are looking in furthering our education, and we have a pool budget we can use for further training. Question i have, Some members are looking at getting MTA, and moving up from there. Anyone got any good companies that you recommend? We are Essex based, so any around here or somewhat near be handy. Myself, i am looking at furthering my Sysadmin skills, and MTA so equally same question. Did have a look on-line, but since its varied and diverse, rather see if anyone here had good interaction with some companies they recommend. Any other info just ask, rather not bombard with details. Cheers!

Nice stuff! Used to stream alot of Final fantasy 14, and other mmorpg's in my prime. I think with my 300mbit line/PC i should be ok as well hah. And ahhh that game! I believe i own it, have to check when i get home. Also seen table top simulator? Also, i have started replaying a old classic i enjoyed. Half life 1 mod called Sven Coop; http://www.svencoop.com Some run and gun, but with alot comical effect! Got a server up and running if anyone has alike.

How you finding the new chip? Cant wait to get one.......after i buy a flat, and do my driving lessons, buy a car...... *cries*
-
doubt anyone would have an issue right But aye, doubt many places would take us if we did a hall sided stream. Think would be better if we worked on smaller streaming, see how it goes and how many people we can get on board =) I think there could be something here if we get plenty of people joining in. Plus got a sever sitting behind me not doing much if that helps at all =)
