  1. well i rang up RM helpdesk about this, cause i wanted to create some users so that teachers could sit the actual exams, but they advised me not to do this and suggested i use the annon account, so i scrapped that idea... Im sure u could just make some up, each one has to have a unique UPN number, and from what i know, QCA dont check that the pupil name and the UPN number match....
  2. these tests are hard going on the hardware, so u need a fairly good spec machine, but from what u got, it should be fine.... the only other thing i can think of is, try in just the one room, but they also create a lot of network traffic and put a lot of strain on the server as all the tests that the students do are Zipped and then send back to QCA.... i dont think choosing anonymous for all the kids will help, cause what the server does is track the progess of each test, so if one test fails you are able to recover the test from when it crashed..... the only think i can think of there is that cause u have a lot of kids using the same login (anonymous) that the server is getting confused.

    XP Print Spooler

this problem is only happening on the one laptop... they only printers that get installed onto the laptop are from the server and we are not having any probelms with any of the other machines on the network.... I have looked in the print spooler folder and its empty.... it wont map any printer to the machines for it to send print jobs....
  4. Hi I was wondering if anyone else has ever had the same problem. Ive got a laptop and its running xp sp2 and im using Viglen Classlink... the problem im having is that the print spooler starts for a minute and then stops and wont restart, if i manually restart the service it stops in a minute.... This is causing issues when the local machine is trying to map printers from the server. ive checked the event logs and i am getting the following Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7031 Date: 16/05/2006 Time: 10:03:48 User: N/A Computer: LAPTOP-001 Description: The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. the above is the first event and then they follow as below Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7034 Date: 16/05/2006 Time: 10:04:56 User: N/A Computer: LAPTOP-001 Description: The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s). For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. can someone help me out, cause its really doing my head in.. Thanks
  5. thats a good point, i would bet money on the fact that Password policies are applied at domain level.... Im guessing there is some sort of trust between the admin and cur networks

    A request.

we use Pugh to get all our microsoft software.... any they are good on price aswell, does anyone else use them?
  7. its a possibility that cause there are so many tests going on at the same time that its slow..... I have a room with GIG switch and all desktops have GIG cards, and that is 30 students, and we are finding it slow when the tests are getting sent back to the server when it says they are going back for marking.... This testing software does create a lot of traffic on the network..... we have 3 rooms which are all in use, but only one of the rooms is doing the exmas and we have sessioned forms to come in at different times, I.E today i have to run 4 test sessions its doing my head in!
  8. 170 in one go, that is going to be a nightmare! i would recommend not to go down that path... I think i recieved an email to say that the test wont work with Firefox or I.E 7
  9. Ive had this problem happen a few times, cause ive been running the tests this week, the max pupils we have working on them at any one time is 30... when this happens, ive closed the student session using Test Administrator rights, and then restarted the machine and when the student logs back onto the network the DPS starts them off where they were last.. i understand this adds time to the session.
  10. currently in the middle of running the ICT KS3 SATS when i was installing the software, i spoke to one of there tech support, and they told me that it would install without problems on XP machines. they just need to be connected to the internet at all times
  11. yea i think i will be in the same situation at Geoff, i dont think there is one machine in my school that is up to spec to have Vista installed onto it
  12. yea i know, that is one issue with Print Quota, ive just bought some new HP colour lazers, and found that Print Quota doesnt support the drivers from HP it will only work with PCL 5 and 6 drivers, which is a BIG pain!
  13. i understand PCounter is a very good piece of software where it does all the department costing for you, and then u can generate a report and get departments to pay for there printing..... I use the one built into Viglen Classlink... and we set teachers and students with print credits, and when they run out, they have to buy more, and if teachers run out, then the ICT dept charges the department for the cost of the print credits
  14. i would say both, here its more the Teachers that i dont get on with, but at the last place it was the whole department
  15. Is it me or is it known that in most schools that the ICT department / Network Managers and Technicians NEVER get on with the Science departments in their schools? This was the case at the last 2 schools that i worked at, and its still the same at the one that i work at now
  16. I agree with Sims Science staff are from a different planet!
  17. Im on my own at the moment, and im running 250 nodes on my tod, I dont know what the ratio is, but i know some school are a lot better equipped with technicians then we are, its purely down to budgeting i guess... I would be interested to know what the ratio should be
  18. yea i have the same problem as you do, we are on the same setup as u are, and have to trawl through loads of junk before i can do nething.... I would like to move over, but budgets is stopping me from doing that at the moment!
  19. gotta say that i have never heard of them....
  20. Geoff, does that mean u use it at the mo? if you are getting rid of it, what are u moving towards? Are you going to use the likes of RM or build custom netowrk
  21. Was just wondering, is there any school out there that use Viglen Classlink. What do you think about classlink, and how has the support for classlink been for you.

    VLE

I would like to set up a VLE and then leave it for the teachers to manage the content that goes onto the VLE. but i know that will not be the case... as i am sure that is the case with many places
  23. We started with 3COM, but had loads of problems with them, which lead to having to update the firmware, but this didnt really solve the problem, and the range was very more on these access points. I moved over to Cisco and got rid of all the 3COM equipment and they are working like a dream, we only have the basic 1121 series Aironet AP's but they do the job with a good range on them, very stable and quick

    VLE

Thanks for that, i will take a look through it
  25. Im looking to buy in some new hardware, and i was just wondering peoples experiences with Stone computers and Dell computers! I have been previously been buying Viglen machines and they have been very good, but they seem to be getting a lot pricey at the moment, so have been looking else where any comments about the above suppliers
