Greetings, Im looking to solve a problem i have with the length of time it takes from windows booting to logon to actually being able to log on. As it stands when a user gets to the windows logon screen they have to wait an average of 30 seconds before trying to log on else they get no domain controller available and cannot log on. There is a lot of disk activity and only when this has stopped will it actually let you log on. I have already changed the power management to mimimum and disabled the ability for windows to turn off the nic. The clients are running win7 sp1, intel 3945 wireless nic on a meru network. Any help would be appreciated. James

They must be picking up some kind of broacasts as the switches are always busy even when the machines have been idle for some time. All the activity lights flash in unison suggesting to me its something being recieved as opposoed to sent

Hi Guys. We have a procurve backbone across 4 blocks running trunked fibre between the blocks. Procurve 5406zl in each block running to the data points. In a lot of offices we're then running clients off of netgear unmanaged gs608 and fs605 switches due to lack of data points. Ive run traceroutes back to the dc and getting one hop replies.

Greetings, We have a lot of offices where there isnt the infrastructure to support additional desktops and in these offices we have no choice but to use hubs. We use netgear 5/8 pt switches however when these are used they cause no end of problems for the computers running off them. We also loose the ability to connect to and monitor wireless points and printers that are connected to them. I realise that adding hubs to managed switches isnt a good idea but can anyone explain to me why we have this trouble? Should I be buying a different type of hub/switch? Many thanks James

Greetings, Not sure if this is the right place to post but would like advice on upgrading our nas box. We currently have an HPAiO1200 3tb server running 2003 storage server. Its getting on now and im looking at swapping it out in the next year or so. There are lots of nas boxes out there and I would like to know if anyone has something they would recommend. Im probably looking at doubling the storage to futureproof but that also raises the topic of how to backup such a large amount of data. All comments/advice welcome. Thanks James

thanks for your reply.. so can i still get away with using mandatory but in addition to redirected profile? wont windows ignore the mandatory appa data in that case??

Greetings, Our setup currently uses forced mandatory profiles, this is great for applying the same settings throughout the users and them not being able to change anything. This does however cause problems when using programs that need personalising such as outlook and a lot of our media software. We also chose them to keep network load at a minimum while using laptops and keep the logon times respectable. One example is some music software we use which would normally ask the user to set up the hardware and project storage area during start up. With a normal profile you could change this yourself and choose the hardware relative to the machine. Because they are all identical i can set through the mandatory profile for them which generally works, however if anything about the machine changes, especially if its reimaged and the hardware is assigned a different id this does not work.. I need a more flexible aproach that will allow users to personalise programs/environments the way they want to while at the same time keeping the profiles as small as possible. I would appreciate any advice you all may be able to give as to whether i should change the type of profiles we use or if there are ways around the issue. Thanks James

did you get anywhere in timing access to the vlan? We dont want students using it and wasting time during the day but want them to use it after hours for their coursework.

thanks for your replies guys. I dont think its the switch port because we have a filtering box between the switch and the router which can still be accessed. Our config is like this core switch - filtering box - isa firewall - demarcation box - bt fibre switch. The filtering box can still be accessed from internal network which would seem to rule out a switch issue. Checking the nics on the filtering box the internal nic is live and working but the external nic is showing as dead. Same as the internal/external nic on the isa box and the internal nic on the demarcation box. There was no problem when i set the link speed of both nics of the filter box to 100mbfdx, only occured when i manualy set the isa nics to that speed. The moment i did that the nics on the other devices stopped recieveing. James

Greetings, Im running server 2k8rw with forefront 2010 as a firewall only. I have been having latency issues and as a test i tried to manually force the link speed on both the nics down to 100mb-fd as a test. As soon as i changed the link speed down the network card refused to work, no lights, nothing. I had already configured the switch port down to the same. Even after a reboot the network card stopped working as soon as server had loaded to the logon screen. Any ideas would be helpful as to what may be causing this. THanks James

how do i go about assigning dhcp to the different vlans?

Can i vlan off the individual ssid's or does it not go that deep?

Hi all, I have been tasked to setup wireless access for the students so that after school hours they can use their phones/laptops to access the wireless network and gain access to the internet. I am completely new to vlans and have no idea what to do. I operate a meru wireless network with a procurve 5406 backbone. I dont want them to have any access to the main network whatsoever, just simply as a passthrough to the internet. The wireless access points are spread throughout the building on different switches which is where i get a bit concerned because last time i tried messing around with vlans i completely ballsed the switch... My main questions are as follows. Can this be setup through the meru controller, which i believe can set up vlans, and avoid making config changes to the switches? Is it possible to set access up for certain times of the day? Is there a better way to do this? All advice is appreciated. Thanks James

problem we have is where the backup is well into two tapes its very inconvenient to come in over the weekend and change them over for the backup and then again for the verify.... Any suggestions?

i must be thinking of another strategy because i thought even with doing daily incrementals and weekly differentials you would still need only the differentials since main backup to bring it back to date... Can you please clarify for me?

i havent as yet gone to a workstation with a bad address since it was happening on so many pcs at once i had to keep the rest of the clients going. I have only one dhcp server so will look into that. Duke thats a great idea, if what i have done so far doesnt work this will be the next course of action i take.

Greetings, We currently run a backup rotation of 1 monthly full backup, monday to thursday incremental and friday differential via archive bit. Does this work as a strategy? One of the problems we have is the daily incremental for certain folder doesnt seem to be backing up files that are changed on that day but everything in that particular folder. Is this because we are using archive bit instead of modified time seeming as everything in said folder is replaced daily but since its being copied and replaced by a batch file daily the modified time doesnt change? That wouldnt explain however why the weekly differential backup which is usually smaller than the daily incrementals? Any advice welcome. James

it was the lan + wan nic that had been bridged. The nic was plugged in and active and the wireless card was also live and connected to the network.

could a network bridge a staff member set up on their laptop be causing this to happen?? James

Thanks for such a quick replies. Ive heard of wireshark but never used it, what am i looking for? I have just cleared them and within seconds they are all back again. The mac addresses are still unique and i find it hard to believe that many different machines have failed all at the same time (although i cant rule it out either)
