    Guys, I have just completed an domain & server upgrade to 2k8r2. 2 old 2k3 servers demoted l/rebuilt and promoted back. The issue I'm having is the clients are taking a long time to start up and when they logon they can't get mapped drives via script. The event logs have 1054 errors saying it cant access the policy and gptinit errors where logon scripts aren't running. For some reason I can't access the scripts folder on dc01 which is the first dc. I can't access the c$ admin share or browse the server in network neighborhood. However I can browse and see the c$ share on dc02 which was the second to be promoted, I can see the sysvol of that server also. There don't seem to be any dhcp/dns issues as the servers can be pinged resolved and nslookup is working as expected. Is there any special security setting I have missed? I built both the servers in the same way too.. Thanks for any help! James

    yep that makes sense. Ill make sure i choose an alternate name.. One more thing thats struck me, thinking passwords now, none of our passwords would comply with password complexity that 2k8 uses. Will migrating the dc's to 2k8 force password changes for all the users?

    sorry had a blonde moment there... re read it and ive got it now.. Should i be able to add as a second name to my new 2k8dc the name of the current dc its replacing? Or will this cause merry hell?

    Had a good time thanks llama. How do you give a server a second name? never done that or even realised it was possible.. Thanks for the walkthrough skreem, it will be most heklpful when i do this next week.

    Greetings, We have all staff setup with local accounts on their issued laptops running windows xp pro sp3 and they print to shared network printers via our print server. The local accounts are created with the same user name and password as their domain account to save confusing them. Normally when you try and connect to a shared network printer from a local account you would have to put in a domain account/password. However we map users home network drives to the server the printer shares reside on using a script i wrote which uses net share and /user:domainname\%username% /persistent:yes which takes the local username as a domain username and the local password to allow printer access. This negates the need to type in the credentials manually. However since we moved the printer shares onto a new 2k3 member server, still part of the same domain, it refuses to allow connection. It will add the printer but when you go to access the printer it will say connection refused and you cant print or do anything. If i add with net use the ipc share this works but only for that session and its lost on reboot. Any ideas what im doing wrong? Thanks James

    Guys, forgive me for being thicker than the offspring of a village idiot and a tv weather girl (to quote red warf) but should i be able to to add a 2008 r2 server as a member server to my 2003 domain without having to upgrade the schema? I will not be running it as a dc it will be strictly sql sims server only.

    sweet, thanks... am i right in saying that the forest/domain functional level only affects the domain controllers? Should i be able to put the domain level upto 2008 server after i have upgraded both dcs? I wont have any problme with the rest of the member servers being 2003 will i?

    both the dcs are 2k3 at the mo but theyre being rebuilt to 2k8 so that i can run windows 7 clients with the full features... Thinking about it, will i loose any functionality on the windows 7 clients if im running 2008 std as opposed to 2008R2 on the dcs? Im guessing i wont since 7 is essentially vista anyways but i want to be sure.

    Should i be ok with running 2003 std servers in the mix as it looks like most of my servers dont have 2008 drivers too after checking a little more. One of those is our nas box which is running 2003 storage server and one of which is running isa 2004.. The link to the walkthrough is. http://www.pbbergs.com/windows/articles/Upgrading_Active_Directory_from_2003_to_ 2008.htm the only thing i would be aware of in that document is that the schema level on the 2008r2 disc i have it 47 not 44 as stated in the instructions and the revision is 5 instead of 2. You may come across the same thing. Could someone confirm this is the correct level please? One more thing, if you are running 32 bit server currently then you will need to run adprep32 as opposed to adprep in the instructions.

    hi guys, I started off a test domain with a 2k3 DC and a few clients. I then built up a 2k8 server seperately. I raised the schema to 2k8 level which i found a doc for on the net, really helpful one with screenshots too. Told me all the tests with the support tools to make sure there wouldnt be any problems. Bought in the 2008 server, added the domain controller role. Took the fmso roles and demoted the 2k3 server. Then added a new dns server which already had the zones from the old dc. Then logged on with a client no problem I know i hadnt done that quite right as i wasnt sure where the dns part should have been done. I also ran the MAP toolkit on my network and it turns out 4 of my 8 servers arent upto 2k8r2. Not a problem really as one is being ditched anyways. However the 3 remaining servers that arent R2 compatable are the 2 DCs and our NAS box. Doh! What gains will i have with 2k8R2 over 2K8 vanilla? Or is it really not a problem if im not virtuallising ? Thanks for all your help guys, its made this so much easier and i know there are people i can talk to who have done this before which is a huge relief

    brill will give that a try... when i set up the new server to take charge will i still have to set up dhcp & dns or will that come across when i promote it to DC?

    Thanks for the replies guys. Will have a look at that toolkit and see what it picks up. Sounds like the best route is to as you say, take out dc02/use a desktop and build that up with 2008 using that as a go between. Wont i get any problems with wiping the domain controllers, rebuilding them then adding them in as effectively new controllers? Can use the same names? Ive heard scare stories over the years of servers that werent removed properly then they had been reused and the domain still thought they were dcs when bought back as members. Is there a prodedure for downgrading a DC before removing it? Cheers guys. JAmes

    Greetings, We are looking at migrating to 2008 Server this summer in order to run Windows 7 with full functionality. Its the first time i have personally done something like this and I need some advice please. I have 2 x 2003 server standard domain controllers, call them DC01 & DC02 It seems that all the FSMO roles are on DC01. DNS is installed on both servers while DHCP is installed on DC01. I want to keep DC01 as the main domain controller as its the higher spec server of the two. My main questions are.. 1. Is Server 2003 upgradeable to 2008 or will it need a re-install. 2. Assuming it is upgradeable it is possible to do it in-situ without having to move roles, demote, remove, upgrade, promote. Are there any pit falls and what is the procedure for a process like this? 3. If it isnt possible to upgrade and a reinstall is in order, whats the procedure for moving roles, demoting and re promoting. Will i still keep policies and all the other settings we currently have. 4. Is it possible to have a back up of the server in case this goes horribly wrong? Many thanks for any help you can give!     Greetings, Our students have found out that if they turn off the wireless during logon then the vast majority (if not all) of the group policies apply that are set for them. Meaning they can change settings, access programs they shouldnt etc. Any way i can either force the policies to re-apply as soon as the network connection is re-establised or force a logoff if it drops during logon?     Greetings, I recently approved the latest batch of updates on my wsus server however on clients that have been updated i have noticed strange problems. 1. When logging on as local admin i always get an error saying the temp folder doesnt. This is happening on any updated client even those that had worked fine previously just the other day. 2. I also have office deciding to installing components for no reason which shouldnt be happening as they are all complete installs with local cab files. Any ideas anyone? Cheers

    Another update, Can confirm i have forced the creation of a folder by opening a word document through outlook web access. When viewing an email in outlook web access, i then open a word attatchment. This doesnt cause the creation of a folder, however closing internet explorer while the document is open in an explorer window does cause the creation of the folder in the users documents area.

    guys, an update to previous post... i have found one of these folders with actual files in them, the text file it turns out had an excel header to it so i opened it up in excel and voila an excel spreadsheet appeared.. One of the _r files has a header that is the web address which matches our outlook web access server. My guessing is its users opening word/excel files from inside an email as opposed to saving it and working on it that way. Not sure why it would create these files though. Do you owa paulk? James

    ricki, have checked the save options and i havent got that option ticked. I also checked in the options where to create the autosave and it was directed to the user profile. Paulk, That sounds like we are getting somewhere! Ive done exactly the same thing i think and its since then that its started. I recently removed some lingering traces of the account name i used to create the mandatory profile in the shell folders registry section. Im testing too to see if that made a difference. Please let me know how your testing goes, im eager to see if its worked. james

    At the time it seemed to be mainly word causing it.. Ive tried to replicate the problem today with a the user account i know that had the problem but i cant get it to do it at all.. It does still happen though as there are loads on user areas with todays date on them.

    that sounds like a good way to test.. but it all depends on whether or not office is being told to save temporary data into the users documents folder or not.. I say that because it creates the random folder when the program is started which suggests to me some sort of temp data storage or settings storage.

    I was wondering if that was the case but i started with a completely new mandatory profile in the summer rebuild and im still getting the same problem... Any suggestions? Im still banging my head against this one, one of my users has 300 folders theyve been holding onto thinking theyre important lol.. Im certain it is office but not sure what i can do about it.

    hey jack0w... No im afraid this wasnt resolved. Im still fighting this daily. Some users who havent check their documents folder have hundreds of these folders.. Im convinced its something to do with office and mandatory profiles as i dont get these in my documents and have my own user profile with different settings. Glad someone else is seeing what i see. Any ideas?
