Greetings, Having a weird issue thats just started in the last week. For no reason at all the dhcp leases suddenly fill up with bad addresses until the scope is full and noone can log on. The network grinds to a halt at the same time. Nothing has been changed on the dhcp side of things but a few months ago i had enabled dns scavenging, however this problem has only happened twice in the last week. It seems to happen at the time the clients renew their leases which would explain why there is a sudden flood of bad addresses but i cant think of anything that would be causing this to happen. Any ideas, advice are most welcomed! James

I was quoted a very competitive price for symantec endpoint and while the quote for Mcafee was well off in terms of price, as a whole group of products i would like your opinions on which of the three is best in your eyes. Thanks for all your replies guys.. @jcmcdermott - thats what i thought too regarding ip6.. With regards to filtering, we will be using a system provided by lseurope who are mainly an education focused company whos filtering is setup with that in mind. We've looked it over and its very granular what we can do with it. @MYK-IT We have covered all those bases already thanks, but thanks anyways as its always good to get peoples advice incase we missed something. Just for info, we have gone with a company called exponential-e who are providing a 100mb leased line for 9.2k pa. Plus they content peer with sites such as youtube so theres hardly any latency involved.

Thanks for your reply labasque. Windows firewall is disabled by gpo on our network. I tried your suggestion re "network discovery" which was turned off. Ive tried turning it on but after a couple of reboots still nothing. Any further ideas welcome

Greetings, We have decided to go alone with our own broadband due to the appaling service and cost of our local authority provision. I have been asked by our new provider for some ip information and since ive never had to worry about this before, since its been dealt with by the la, i would like some advice please. IP6 - our new provider has asked if we are wanting to use ip6 in addidition to ip4. Seeming as we have nothing as far as im aware that specifically requires ip6 i dont see the need unless anyone has any suggestions as to why it would be necessary.. NAT - as far as im aware the local authority nat our line. However seeming as we're breaking away is nat really necessary for our line since it can cause issues with lots of other network services. We currently have our main functions hosted off site, email, vle, slg and i dont see them being bought back internally any time soon. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. James

Greetings, Please can anyone explain to me why when a teachers laptop is on wireless it cannot see the network. It will only show itself up and nothing else. I have no problem when hard-wired, only when using the laptop on wireless. I have tested using local admin and a sysadmin account and both have the same issue. This i only discovered when netsupport refused to find clients despite there being hundreds active across the network. When running hardwired with the same accounts it found all of them. I have checked the ip configuration and nothing out of the ordinary shows up. Thanks for any assistance. James

Greetings, I have a user power profile setup and ive noticed after reading through the power managmenent policy whitepaper that im missing a part that controls power save mode for the wireless adapter. I have gone through the power policy and these are the only settings i can see in gpo. This is what im missing, not worried about the rest, just the wireless adapter settings. Even when i install policy manager onto a laptop and manage the policy from there it still does not appear as an option. Any ideas? Thanks james

We always had the staff in the power users group specifically to solve this problem we had while running xp.. Looks like the power users group doesnt have the same level of access that it used to. Our chap from Qest popped over to have a look at it this morning and he seems to think that granting them local admin rights is the best way to go, either that or your suggestion of running as an admin. I cant find a way of doing that when using redirected start menus though.

Was there any way around this as i have exactly the same problem and the only way i could remedy was to add user to the local admin group which isnt a desirable option to me.. I dont have any software restriction policy that would stop that file running though. James

Greetings, I am in the process of making a win7 image but am stuck as many have been on adding drivers via unattended.xml. I just want to make sure im not missing anything. Unattended.xml is pasted below The drivers are in a folder c:\deploy. I have added them in both the generalize and auditsystem sections of unattended plus i have added the persistdrivers false also. Any idea why my drivera are being ignored? Thanks James . Forgive the late reply guys, its been a hectic few days. Just got back to this today, had to put it out of my mind for the weekend as i wasnt gonna let it ruin my weekend away... I feel like such a fool as something i should have checked and honestly thought i had checked, the blooming default gateway, was incorrect on dc01 which held all the roles. The air was blue here when i realised what id done. The odd thing is that its the first server i rebuilt and i hadnt had any initial problems until i bought the second controller in which was setup correctly. Unbelieveable i made such a basic mistake. Nevertheless, thankyou very much for all your help, its a huge relief to know there are people who are so willing to help. Thanks again guys.

Yes i have rebooted the clients. Ive been logged onto the server with domain admin account and can browse from dc01-dc02 and vice versa and can see the sysvol and netlogon shares. The clients are running xpsp3. Wins isnt installed as far as im aware as we're only xpsp3 clients and above. Attatched is a readout of net diag from a problem client. Makes reference to spn issues. i dont notice any red event errors in application, system, dfs, dns, file replication logs.

ok For example, i can browse network neighborhood and see a list of clients. I can browse into a client and see the printers & faxes/sheduled tasks. However, when i reboot dc02 i loose that ability even though dc01 is still up and running. As soon as the server has rebooted and back online i can again browse those clients as before. If i however go to browse dc01 at any time, i get the dc01 in not accessible error with a reason of network path not found.

thats what i would assume that meant... Im pretty sure the problem is linked to dc01. When i did a reboot on dc02 i could view the network and see what was there but not the browse those machines, however as soon as dc02 came back up i could browse to the machines and see printers/shares

looks like the two largest files are 10mb each, which is some sort of log. The rest are anything up to 2mb

i looked at that NCSecDes article also and i did look at running that during the dcpromo stage but i was never going to be using read only controllers so i didnt run it. Will run the bpa and post results. i cant help thinking its some sort of access issue. I should be able to browse dc01 via network neighborhood but i cant, it tells me i dont have permission to use the network resource. What could be causing that?

Thanks for the replies guys. I haven't checked the sysvol sukh, will do first thing when i get in. I think the reason i hadn't already checked that was because I couldn't even browse that server so I assumed it was a different issue. Never can tell with server though lol. I checked with repadmin and it reported that the replication had occurred. The annoying thing is that I wasn't aware of this problem before I bought the second dc in so I can't say whethe that had played a part in it.
