Thanks for your replies everyone, i knew this would be a good place to come. I was starting to think the system spec could be the problem with cubase being a little hungry, im running xp on Intel Core 2 Duo E4300, 1.8GHz, 2GB systems. In my opinion theyre a little long in the tooth. When using asio4all to set latency lower then 192samples i start getting breakups and scratching especially when they add video into the mix. My only quote so far included the lexicon alpha studio and after looking on a few sites i have seen mixed reviews. Im not after high end, just standard level so it should do the job.. Im a total noob audio setup wise so let me just get my head around it. Am i right in saying if i bought an audio interface i would plug the speakers etc into this as opposed to the onboard and leave the onboard disabled? Will the usb midi keyboard still work in that configuration? I dont have to plug that into the audio interface do i? Can I just use is as a normal usb device and the audio inteface will do the rest? Also, whats the general consensus on upgrading these systems? Personally i think i should.... Thanks again everyone.

Greetings, We currently use cubase 3 & sibelius 4 with usb midi keybaords, standard onboard audio and asio4all. I have been having nothing but problems with latency and patchy audio running these programs with forced mandatory profiles on windows xp. The lower i get the latency the more patchy the audio becomes or just doesnt work at all. With the rest of the network being win7 im looking to upgrade these machines to that plus the software to cubase 6 & sibelius 7. All the quotes ive received have mentioned using audio interfaces but im not sure what difference these would make bearing in mind we use usb keyboards. Should i be looking to upgrade or can anyone suggest a solution to my audio problems. Thanks James

Had exactly the same problem here. Reported it through lightspeed and after a week or so got the answer back that it was down to youtube (read google) and there was no timescale. A pretty annoying answer considering that this feature was one of the main reasons we went for lightspeed. THis was what i received Hi James, Regarding YouTube and the Education Library, I’ve been informed that this is a known issue and is a defect on the YouTube side which they have acknowledged and there is nothing we can do until they resolve this. If you would like I can get this case put into the defect queue, which once resolved I can then inform you. Greetings, Im testing an online tutoring system which is supposed to communicate on port 1935 and default back to 80 if it cannot use that port. I have setup a rule to allow in/outbound access for that protocol yet it defaults back to using port 80. In the log i can see it open and close port 1935 but thats it, it refuses to cotinue using it. We have been running our teachers laptops for the last five years, some of them have been through five or six different users. When we upgraded them to seven a couple of summers ago we just made sure they had a good size drive and 2gb memory which for general use is ok. The only problems we have is dying batteries, psu damage, broken screens and water spills but very small number of those. But we have the dilemma of when to retire these and upgrade.. we have a few grumbles from teachers moaning about wanting new laptops but as soon as I ask them to justify why they magically disappear. the software hasn't really changed so why should the spec need to change.

I setup a computer network object called CANDG using its ip address, i then created a rule to allow all protocols from CANDG to EXTERNAL. Even setup the two catglobal servers up and set a rule for all protocols to CANDG to GATGLOBAL1 & CATGLOBAL2.

The funny thing is if enter no username and password, click login, i can see the server attempt to talk to 159.182.112.240 as it should, however if i put the correct username and password in, click ok, i get nothing, no attempt to talk to their servers whatsoever.

Greetings, I need help with this awful piece of software. After years of fighting with this piece of pony I had been running it no problem for almost a year when it inexplicably stopped working. Even after a complete server rebuild i still cant get it working. We are running forefront 2010 but i havent changed anything policy wise on that for a very long time. All i can do is get to the login screen, enter my username and password (which is correct) and then i just get a load of beeps and a message saying there was an error in the esmserver.. I have installed it onto a different machine and also have this problem. The only thing i can put it down to is the firewall but nothing has changed and it doesnt even seem as if the traffic from the server is hitting the firewall any more when i try to log in. I can see normal web traffic hitting the firewall when i test the browser but nothing from the esm server software to the promissor server addresses and their support team say that no logon attempts have been logged their end either.. Been on the phone to catglobal and even the usa tech support and neither of them have been very helpful Any suggestions would be most welcome. James

the local policy doesnt differ from machines that do work, which i cant explain.... Im also getting random uac style dialog boxes when i try and delete folders/files saying i need to take permission but the account im using is a full local admin and a domain admin.

tried that too, no mention in the log that it was even blocked, very odd

sorry, its winadmin.exe Its the executable for online alan testing. Ive checked all my policies and its definitely not blocked

I have a chrome blocking policy (see attached), could that be causing it? The only problem is that this policy isnt applied to one of the tested users affected but is another however both get denied.chromeblockreport.pdf

This is a subject that frustrates me immensely. I regularly get old video tapes with films that have been taped off the telly or even original copies and get asked to copy them for archive sake. Techincally its illegal but most staff seem to think education are immune from prosecution which really annoys me. I guarantee they will always say its for education use when they want it copied to get away with it thinking that makes it all better. We also get students ripping stuff of websites such as youtube for use in their presentations which as far as the teacher is concerened is perfectly fine and just necessary for them to do their coursework. The excuses are that they have to show its their own choice or topic and resource to get high marks and if the resources are what a teacher provides them it doesnt get very good marks. The network has loads of bits of video like this and i cant just remove them and mess up their projects but i cant let it continue either. Im looking for concrete answers as to what is/isnt allowed for educational purposes and why those who set these courses dont provide resources that are legally usable. Any ideas guys?

Spot on, thanks. Do most rely on this method for backup now? Im still a little wary of relying on a hdd based box to backup to. Im so used to having tapes and having them securely stored in a fire safe it seems so much safer than relying on drives as a backup. What do you think would be the best procedure if i wanted to keep my master backup, dailies and weeklies on the the dumb nas but also keep a tape backup of the master and weeklies?

Ah I understand, thanks for clearing that up Yep its just for backing up to.. Ive never used iscsi before but from what i know i can use it across the network cant i? I would prefer to be able to locate this backup box somewhere in another block for safety purposes.

Ive been looking at the qnap as a backup box as you suggested, like a 6/8tb model. The one thing im worried about is that we use backup exec 2010 which uses agents on the server. Im guessing qnap uses a bespoke o/s so how would that work?

Hi Chris, Sorry it took so long to reply. Had a week off and promised myself i would avoid all work and actually have a break. Im reluctant to spend any more on the existing server due to its age so your cheap nas option sounds like the best but just replacing drives on the old server would still be cheaper.. Im still hoping to get some sort of use from our ultrium4 drive but its the restoring data part that takes the time.. I went for the hp storage server in the end for the new nas so now im looking at refining our backup methods.

I see what you are saying Chris, sounds like the only difference between your plan and mine is the full backup at the end of each week. In an ideal world i would love to do that but for us a full backup (by which I assume you mean everything, all user data and shared area data) currently stands well over 1tb which would swallow half our storage in one go. We dont dedupe or anything like that either As an example with our current set up our last weeks figures were 18gb,8gb,8gb,13gb,112gb.

We currently perform our daily backup (working set-changed today) which average between 8/20gb of which 4gb is sims database and weekly backups (working set - changed in last x days) which range between 80/120gb. We will need around 1.6tb on our new storage box but this will climb much higher as i will be able to relax our quotas a lot. Our existing box will have 1.8tb free when its been wiped. When you say daily data change can you explain to me a little more what you mean? Thanks James

looks like the network never really peaked above 40%-50% but averaged nowhere near so should be quite safe. Investing in the extra capacity is all well and good but im probably going to need to rethink backing up this data too.. Until recently we were able to get away with full backups daily however with the massive ammount of extra space we will have available i can afford to be much more lenient with quotas. I was considering repurposing the existing nas as a backup server but with only 2tb useable space i wont be able to make a full backup to it, only dailies and incremental.. Whats the best way around that? Usually when i bump up the storage i bump up my backup drive too and lto6 should cater to that but is it really necessary?
