app deployment is where SCCM picks up the slack gpo msi installs fail..... run software center... select advertised app, install. (providing the administrator hasn't told the software center just to install it with out user notifications). But SCCM is a different beast, but well worth looking into.

Microsoft to move out of the education market?
Areku replied to Dave_O's topic in Licensing Questions
We had a managed service, managing all our data + MIS system. Availability was "ok" Until we had a series of power cuts / spikes that killed our on site servers, not problem.... or so we thought we will roll back to the managed service backups... which they assured us they where doing... Turns out, they had stopped backing up several months prior (technical problem) no one at the managed service had noticed.... mail server had to be rebulit and manually porting as many mails over as possible..... MIS server........... the SQL was screwed. They had to contract one of those data recovery companies (at a cost of around 100k) to recover the SQL database off the wrecked SAN. Whilst this totally sat with the provider to sort out, we where still with out a mail server for almost 2 weeks, and with out MIS(Sims) for a whole week.... there is still, to this day a 2 week period in our Sims database. where there is no attendance, assessment, or another data recorded. TLDR. Just because "backups is their problem" doesn't mean they care about YOUR DATA. This is one of the many reasons, we moved back from hosted/cloud/managed services, back in house, then at least if it falls over, its our problem to sort and we have procedures in place that work. (and are tested!). I'm not anti cloud as such, we run all the services people tout as being the "benefits of cloud". Only we do it ourselves, I just don't trust a 3rd party to do it correctly anymore. -
Microsoft to move out of the education market?
Areku replied to Dave_O's topic in Licensing Questions
we had several very bad experiences with cloud services, (mail server unavailable for 11 days anyone?, MIS server disappearing for a WEEK), we brought back everything in house. and yes, this was a LARGE provider. What ever solution we go for, be it increase costs, or alternate methods, it will be all in house, we even offer our own "cloud" services, but its all hosted on our EQ, with our man power, and our connections, they are not offering something we as a school don't already offer our users. Whilst i do get and understand these offerings will attract smaller schools, i don't see MS (or other cloud providers) being used here as a replacement. An Additional service however maybe. -

Microsoft to move out of the education market?
Areku replied to Dave_O's topic in Licensing Questions
I did some quick sums and looks like 1500 a year increase for us, not worried too much as i know there are some "cloud" services we are already paying for that we don't use effectively, so they will be killed to compensate for the MS increase.. -

Free interim filtering solutions
Areku replied to synaesthesia's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
we use protex (e2bns badged e2guardian), does the job, only thing id like to see it do which it currently does not do (or at least i cant find) is some passive list logging (for cp/anti terror etc). Yeah you can get logs of access back, but id like to option to "ok show me all the hits for CP issues" -

also e2guardian is a fork of dansguardian, which is still being updated. and is the solution e2bn sell. e2guardian binaries are free to download/compile yourself. -
download auto, manually during holidays. (or other out of hours, depending on the severity of the update).

Ok, I'm a little confused why the "3rd party" has told you, the customer, that you are not allowed something? If the customer wants a physical management server on the same VLAN as his clients, the customer should be allowed to do so... devices with no management on them? regardless of the "remote" options is..... imo a mistake, and any managed service provider suggesting this should be shot. but then, having dealt with a managed service provider,(for over 3 years) with as narrow minded scope as yours seem to be having, we where only left with one option... showing them the door. not much help i'm sorry, but when i see people struggling with these company's... it really grinds my gears...

Laptops and "Leadership" well assist head
Areku replied to kevin_lane's topic in Learning Network Manager
here the responsibility it totally with the department. they leave them unlocked fine. however we audit them at regular intervals, and any missing or damaged the department gets charged for. most departments soon start to manage their own devices when they are the ones footing the bill. -
Exchange 2013 - Delay sending any email sent after a specific time
Areku replied to trekmad's topic in Enterprise Software
pretty sure this has been discussed in the past, and the only workable solution was a script that stopped the exchange service (possibly the transport). and then restarted it in the morning. -

diversify, we took that attitude when macs where starting to be used for media/music. we now run a fairly successful mac network along side our windows network. however i still deal with school that and i quote "we are never having macs, period". which is kinda sad when we are here to give the students the broadest education we can. Mac, linux or windows, we need to be open minded about it, and cant let our personal short comings effect it. -
been a while since ive ran into this but this is what i used to do: use lockoutstatus to identify which DC that locked it. (and time) check the security log on that DC for the eventlog showing it being locked. then as part of the details of that event log it will show you the "client" hostname where the account was attempted to be used. should tell you what machine/server to start looking at.

RDWeb, we offer both full RDP sessions, and have published our common used apps. (sims etc). RDWeb (and alike other solutions) have been created to offer a decent service to those users who do have slower connections, as well as those with better. Not had any complaints..

Entirely Virtual here, (cept for the best practices loner physical DC) Veeam Backup and Replication for Hyper-V (about 14 servers) Then the Veeam Free "Desktop" Backup for the few physical machines we have, have tested it on server, does fine just unsupported obviously. We have a Dedicated Veeam, backup server, which has access to Internal Storage (about 5tb), San Storage (an additional 3TB), Then it also has Access To a NAS (10TB) located in a different building on the campus. At any time in case of emergency I'm able to recover the entirety of our VM suite, to a few hours ago. With the Physicals, its a day or so MAX.

Downloading from you-tube is the same as "digitizing" your physical books, unless you have brought a license, your breaking the copyright. ALTHOUGH you could be annoying, accept the job, and cut the video to the most useless 29 seconds. (fairuse, for education)

Hey I've been looking into dedupe, and have noticed our file server (2012R2) is not deduping. Anyone know if its safe to turn on, on an active file-server?

squid web interface for configuration
Areku replied to mjs_mjs's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
we use webmin here, as it enabled us to make modifications to the dansguardian system we where using. (which is retired now, but we still use the squid box)
