  1. Sorry I didn't mean basic as in concept or as a put down, Splatoon is a ton of fun and really different to a lot of FPS. However the actual game design and coding behind it is pretty basic. Look at a splatoon map compared to any other modern FPS game for example. Its a lot smaller, its very contained and there honestly is not much going on in them. The way the maps in splatoon are built I wouldn't be surprised if they had a level editor that they could just drag and drop sections in and get a working map. Even if it wasn't that easy there was a lot less work involved than compared to other FPS games. Mario Kart is the same. Tons of fun, very little actual development needed. Courses are a little more complicated but again the style works well for a drag and drop style level editor to be used in production. The karts are all using the same physics model with just a handful of variables that are changed to make them different (top speed, acceleration, etc). Compare that you any other racing game which is simulating things like tyre wear, aerodynamics, suspension, weight, etc and it is really easy to code. Adding a new "character" in mariokart is basically copy paste an old one, swap the model/art assets and slightly change some of the variables around. Even in Super smash bro's a lot of the animations and moves are just copy pasted between characters. That's the reason a lot of Nintendo games are a lot less bugged than other developers games. A typically AAA Nintendo game has a fraction of the code that another developers AAA title has and is much easier to fully bug test and fix. It makes games easier to make but it also means that they don't have a lot going on in them. I remember there being a fairly good mario level editor (i.e. mario maker) that worked in a web browser like 10 years ago (and honestly wasn't a whole lot different to mariomaker is now). When your game is on that level its easy to make it bug free. Mario maker isn't even bug free, we had issues with uploading, maps going missing and other things going wrong All I'm saying is that most of Nintendos games are already created with as little work as possible and they still can't produce more than a handful in a year. I doubt very much that they are going to be producing enough to make a difference for the NX without going even more into games that are just copy/paste swap the art jobs, repeat for as many levels as necessary.
  2. Based on the rumors I'm still not holding my breath that it will be any good. Unless they drastically change their development infrastructure I don't see how they can go from producing so much more software without it being complete junk. I expect to see a ton of quick minigame titles thrown out continuously. Honestly even the "top" wii-u games were really nothing special in terms of production value and games development. Splatoony, very basic "shooting" style game with limited map. Mario maker, basically just a level editor. Mario Kart - pretty basic "racing" game. None of them were ground breaking or particularly complex and still they had a long development time. If Nintendo are planning on using the same resources to put out more games they are most likely going to be even less innovative and more copy/paste the fundamentals while re-skinning it and releasing as a "new" game.
  3. Update: Well I did nothing more to it and the next day it was working normally again... No idea what was going on there.
  4. Not sure if this is the best section but here goes. I have a Windows 7 Pro laptop here that is no longer able to access any HTTPS website using either IE or Chrome. This laptop is connected to the Admin network (Vanilla server 2008 R2) that is pretty much just default settings. The laptop was taken to another school and used yesterday, since then it has had this problem. What I have tried so far: In IE under Options>Advanced>Security. Ticked "Use SSL 2.0" and "Use SSL 3.0" Checked date and time are correct. Tried multiple accounts, including admin account. Checked other computers on the same network are ok (they are). Under the same settings tried disabling all TLS. Tried combinations of SSL and TLS versions being enabled/disabled. In IE under Options>Content - Hit the clear SSL State button. Did this also after making changes. In IE Under SecurityTrusted sites - Added the HTTPS site I was trying to access (Gmail) and set security level to low. In IE hit every Reset/Default settings button I could fine Reregistered DLL files as described here: https://www.techsupportall.com/solved-cannot-access-secure-sites-https-websites-not-opening-view/ Reregistered the same DLL files using the microsoft auto fix. Tried IE, Chrome and firefox - All the same issue. Did a system restore back to last week when it was working ok. Disabled WiFi and used only cable connection (we have had some wifi issues here so was just ruling that out). Enabled IMAP on his gmail account and set up outlook. This will not connect either using SSL, TLS "worked" but was blocked by gmail. I'm now pretty much out of things I can think of to try other than a complete reinstall from scratch (which seems like a bit of a sledge hammer solution). Anyone else got any ideas that I can try?
  5. I tried it again maybe a year or two ago and it seemed completely dead, nothing in the auction house and no groups.
  6. Yeah would have to agree with everyone else, if you have a chance to become a qualified electrician and it is something you are also interested in then take it. IT is very much something you can learn on the side and even the most recognised IT qualifications you can gain yourself. Not so easy to do that to become an electrician though. Also being a qualified electrician could be a big help if you go into IT later. I used to work in the cruise ship and super yacht industry for example and a lot of the big yachts loved having ETO's that were also capable of handling the IT kit and paid really good money for people with the right skills. Lots of other industries will be the same. Generally there are a lot more IT engineers around than qualified electricians and less options for them as well so easier to progress and get a decent salary as an electrician. Edit: Also bravo for having some clear ideas about what you want in life at 16.
  7. 74, was born in '81 so pretty much spot on. Edit: Yeah only reason we have a landline is for internet.
  8. I have recent bought a bunch of cannon ixus 160's for the teachers here. They take a pretty good photo, they are relatively cheap (£50ish a pop), fairly sturdy, easy to carry and super easy to use. I looked at getting a DSLR or two but honestly (IMO) unless the person taking the photos knows how it works a high spec camera probably wont be much better than a semi decent point and shoot compact. Might pick up a lower end DSLR in the future just for taking photos for promotional purposes (probably cannon as that's what I use personally and could bring my lenses in). Would probably only end up being me that would use it though and we could probably end up using my home gear in a pinch if I get some memory cards specifically for it to use in school and leave them here.
  9. Yep remember exactly the same experiences I also remember when it dawned on me and my mate who also had a C64 that we could "pirate" our games using a normal tape recorder and suddenly we could have all the games that the other person had. I also remember The ZZap magazines that had demo tapes stuck to the front of them. I could actually still remember the cover from this edition despite not having looked at it for over 20 years! Maybe its because I played the hell of of Spy Vs Spy that was on the tape. I still have the tapes and probably the mags in storage somewhere. Edit: lol, Looking through the covers now I also remember this issue quite well, not sure what part of it stuck in a teenage boys head so well..... Everyone loves a free poster don't they?
  10. Most of the images I tried it just said it was under the weather, try later. Only results I got was "I think it is a cat looking at the camera" it was a rabbit but close enough I guess.
  11. It is really expensive, that being said I would not swap my £100 kindle paperwhite for any other device (I have actually bought 2 as my first one vanished during a house move). It has a horrible interface, creating collections, adding books and organising them is clunky and annoying but it is hands down the best reading device I have ever used. Super light, days and days of battery life and the e-ink is a million times better to read from than an LCD/LED display. They are also pretty bullet proof and will take a lot more of a beating then any tablet which makes them perfect for travel (mine has survived for years traveling all over the place chucked in my carry on baggage). If I had money to burn I would definitely buy one, they are certainly aimed at people with money to burn though.
  12. Mostly digital. My personal gaming is mostly on PC so pretty much everything I buy goes through steam and I havent bought a physical copy of a PC game in at least 10 years. Both my boys have an xbox one (one in a bedroom the other in the living room) and are set up so they share digital content. This makes it a lot cheaper to buy one digital copy that they can both use over 2 physical copies (normally saves £40-50 depending on the game). The only downside to that is if the Xbox live services are down you cant play anything as it cannot check if you own the rights to it or not.
  13. My first PC was a Tiny brand PC (a 486) and had a 21" monitor the size of a small car To add to the thread, Commodore Also does anyone remember the electronics shop called Tandy (apparently they are still a thing.... Tandy - About Us )
  14. I have been watching this game for a long time but have to say I'm getting less and less excited about it. It looks amazing but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere other than being a "purchase virtual spaceships for increasing amounts of real world money" simulator. Other than lots of new ships (which cost a fairly big chunk of real money) it doesn't really have much different then when I looked at it about a year ago.

I haven't played it for awhile but it is an awesome game. I did do a lets play series on it if anyone is interested but there is probably new stuff in the game by now:
  16. I'm a lot more skeptical than I used to be but still love spooky stories and unexplained encounters. Have had a few strange things happen myself, especially in the house I grew up in. Most recent "odd" thing was a few years ago. Me and my Mrs were walking to the car parked near our house when we noticed a strange black object floating along above the path about 20ft up and maybe 100ft in front of us. It was solid black and maybe 1-2ft across and very thin (5mm-1cm at most), roughly square/rectangle shaped. We both noticed it and couldn't make out what it was. First thoughts were that it was a plastic bag floating in the wind (despite the fact it was a summer day and there was very little breeze). As we got closer it carried on floating down the road at a slow pace. Even when I was stood directly under it (so it was only about 10-14ft above me) I could not make out any details other than it was black, thin and rectangular. It didn't make any noise and it continued hovering at the same height. We watched it float all the way down the road for about 10 minutes and over some house during all this time it moved at the same slow speed and didn't rapidly change height once (like it would if it was just something caught by the wind). I really regret never having taken photo's or video of it as it was the strangest thing I have ever seen. At the time though we both kind of thought we would figure out what it was any minute and it wouldn't really be a big deal (you don't get your phone out to take a photo of a floating carrier bag...). It was only afterwards when we both realised we had no clue what we had just seen that I thought about pictures. When I was growing up as a kid the house I lived in had quite a lot of strange stuff happen in it. Some of the highlights: One time I was having a shower and 5p "fell" from somewhere into the bath at my feet. There was no shelves that someone could have left 5p on and nowhere it could have come from. I did say thank you and asked if they had any more. Tv's used to switch channels and turn on and off when I was around all the time. More than one type of TV over a period of a few years did this. You could leave a room and come back moments later to find cupboards/drawers open. Once I was building a new PC and was having problems with it crashing constantly. I had been working on it for quite some time and couldn't find what the issue was. The doorbell rang so I went to answer it and there was nobody there (this happened on a fairly regular basis). When I went back to the computer (which had been turned off at the time) it was turned on and in one of the bios settings for system voltages where one of them had been set wrong (I had forgot to change it when I had been doing some overclocking). To get to this setting would have taken several keystrokes and it wasn't an automatic thing. I said thank you for the help Talking of doorbells they used to go off by themselves all the time (multiple models of doorbell tried over a period of years). The worst one was a battery operated wireless one that was supposed to just go "ding dong". However any time there was lightening it would go off by itself and play Greensleeves instead. Creepy as hell when it happens at 4am in the morning. (Sounded a lot like this: ) Things went missing all the time and would turn up in unexpected places (like keys going missing from the key hook and turning up in the middle of a pile of folded towels). I was given a silver cross on a chain from a relative once as a kid and was swinging it around messing about with it in my room. I accidentally let go and saw the direction it went in but I never saw it land (in what would have been an open space). That cross and chain were never found despite me spending a long time looking for it for fear of getting told off for losing an expensive gift. Even after the room was completely emptied later to be redecorated it was never found. Very often at night I used to stay up late to watch TV as a kid/Teen and would hear people walking down the stairs only for there to be nobody there and everyone else to be in bed asleep. I once saw the shadowy outline of someone standing in the corner of the bedroom when I was in bed with the lights out. Another time when I was in bed with the lights out I saw 2 red "lights" about a 1ft above a unit (where there was no electrical items with lights on and no reflective surfaces). It looked like 2 red LEDS (actually to me it look like 2 red glowing eyes and scared the crap out of me). When I was very young (maybe between 8-10) I have memories of hearing people talking "in the walls" as if there was a loud conversation happening in the next room, even when everyone else in the house was in the same room as me. Now I'm writing it down I'm remembering a lot of other little things that happened over the years but will leave it there for now unless anyone wants to hear them. My mum and my nephew still live there and apparently nothing has really happened since I moved out over 10 years ago. Despite the fact there is a fairly long list of strangeness I still don't really believe in "ghosts" and think most of it probably had a logical explanation.
  17. I'm possibly losing my mind but I used to go to a page on RM's support site that had an list of all updates for RM CC4 (I'm sure it was on rm....) I cannot for the life of me find it now and oddly it is not in my bookmarks. This leads me to believe that either A) it never existed and I'm going insane, or B) It existed and I just typed in the URL which I have no recollection of and I'm not going insane but I'am losing my memory. Either option isn't good for me really Can anyone point me in the right direction, please... I have spent almost an hour looking through RM's site (which is made no easier by the fact that suddenly we don't seem to have a support contract that lets me access half of it...). Edit: Solved, The wonderful man at the support company we used to use sent it to me http://support.rm.com/technicalarticle.asp?cref=tec1255704 For reference in case anyone else every runs into this thread when searching for it. Funny that searching on RM's website for "CC4 update overview" doesn't show a result for an article titled "CC4 software updates - Overview Guide".
  18. Why can't you hear the pterodactyl when it goes to the toilet? Because it has a silent Pee!
  19. Never heard of it and haven't watched the trailer. However the thumbnail shows me Eva Green is in it so I'm gonna watch this one

That is awesome and some games are easier to do that with than others. On the flip side of making sure ytou do lots of content though also make sure you dont get burnt out on it which is also really easy to do. I regularly watch 30 minute-1 hour gaming videos. If you speak to a lot of youtubers though about their viewing stats most of them will tell you that videos over 20-30 minutes get less views and even a lot of them dont have 100% view rating (i.e 20 out of 30 minutes is watched as they skip the beginning or end). Yeah lets have this conversation again after you deal with youtube for 6 months . Honestly 90% of traffic for gaming videos is driven by the 10-20year old demographic and teens and kids generally wont hang about. If they are flicking through new channels you have about 20-30 seconds to hook them before they will move to the next one. Doesn't have to be scripted. Just edit out any long bits that are not relevant and make sure you don't have any dead air in your videos. Yeah it sucks but it is also the only way your videos will get shown in youtube search results. Pretty much every game that has been out for more than 6 months will have thousands of videos already created about it. All them videos will have more views then yours and a lot of them will come from bigger channels so will all get put in search/recommended results before yours does. The only way to get in the search results for gaming videos on youtube is to not compete on the videos there are already thousands of until you have your channel built up. If you can get out good content for a new game before every other youtuber is flooding the results with the same content then you have a chance of getting in the search results and attracting new subs. The other way to get a chance of being shown in search results is to play something more obscure that has a largish following. For example Kerbal Space Program, there is a guy called Scott Manley who has a pretty big sub base purely from playing this game. I personally really like his videos but I know for sure that if a lot of other big youtubers were playing this game and putting out content for it all the time he wouldn't be as successful. There are a couple of people that are making blood bowl videos as well that are the same. If you find a game that has a big fan following but very little presence on youtube then you have more chance of getting more traffic coming in via the youtube sources (related and search results). Yeah for sure don't be "that guy". However there are a lot of reddit threads for youtubers and there are a lot of gaming forums, a lot of which have areas to post your videos. There are lots and lots of places where it is acceptable and often encouraged to post links to your content. You "just" have to go out, find them and then constantly maintain them. If you can build up a good rep in the communities you are posting in (outside of your "here is my videos" posts) it will help as well (though is very time consuming and may not have as much return as having posting links in 20 other places). Creating a popular youtube channel is pretty much the same as creating a popular web page. Its all about SEO and generating traffic. Yes you need to have good content to but the best content in the world doesn't help if nobody is finding it. Use the analytics to see where your traffic is coming from and look at the viewing information for each video to see if the content is working. If people are watching till the end you are doing ok. If a lot of people are watching 20 seconds and that's it then you either need a bigger hook at the start or there is something wrong with your tags/traffic source and people are coming to your video expecting something else (check the tags and traffic sources for that video). If people are watching about 2/3'rds of each video then consider making them a little bit shorter. The way youtube displays search results is based on subs, likes, comments and "view-ability". If two people put up similar videos and have similar subs, likes and comments then they will be ranked by the percentage of video watched. If only 50% of your video is being watched youtube doesn't consider it engaging content and will down rank it VS a similar video with 70% watched. This is another reason why I suggest keeping intros/outros and dead air to a minimum as people will just skip these bits. Youtube then see's these videos as not being so engaging because they dont have 100% minutes watched and therefore it is harder to get them videos into the search and related results. It isn't if you are realistic. Yeah a 5 million sub youtuber is not going to want to work with you. However that guy that is creating awesome videos like yours but only has 30 subs would probably be happy to work with you. Then that guy with 100 subs might be interested in doing something with the 2 of you and now all 3 of you are working together to cross promote your content. I have next to no subs and haven't released a video in like 6 months at least but still get PM's from people who want to do co-op cross promotion stuff. There are a lot of new youtubers out there that are in the same boat and cross promoting is an easier way to get your stuff in front of potential new subs. All this advice is coming from having tried it from quite a long period of time and chatting/working with other guys that have been doing it for awhile (ranging from 10 sub guys up to 10-20k guys). I only gave any of this "advice" because you mentioned you want to make money from it and if that is the case then this is part of what you have to do. Being successful on youtube now is only marginally about content, its mostly about marketing, SEO and traffic generation. If you are doing it purely for fun then seriously ignore all of this and NEVER look at the traffic or video viewing stats.

Haven't checked it out yet but will do. I had a go at gaming vids on youtube awhile back (https://www.youtube.com/user/MrDuranis) but honestly it is really hard to get going now when there are so many channels. It also didn't help my cause that my voice sucks and is boring as hell to listen too . If you want to get traffic you need to: Have continuous content being released. Don't post long videos. I have a friend that has actually got a pretty good following going and even he doesn't post videos over 20 minutes as people just wont watch them. Keep intros brief, longer than 5 seconds people get bored and click off. In the same vain as above assume every viewer has extreme ADD and make sure that there is some new "thing" every 50 seconds or so. If something takes more than 50 seconds to explain then don't bother. Make sure you are posting on the latest fad game at the time of release (probably The Division at the moment though its a little late for that already). Pimp the hell out of your channel, post on any vaguely related forum, post on any reddit subforum where it fits. Use twitter and facebook and just spam invite people as friends. You will be surprised how many will accept. This is slightly under hand and in no way fun but honestly your game videos will not make it into the first 10 pages of youtube search results or ever be in the related videos unless you already have a massive channel or you are playing something really obscure that nobody else is covering. The only way to drive new traffic to the channel is external links. Work with other youtubers and cross promote. Record co-op commentary and post on both channels encouraging your current subs to go to the other peoples channels. If you have 4 youtubers with 40 subs each and they all manage to convince their subs to check out the others that's potentially 120 new subs. It is surprisingly hard work. The minecraft and factorio videos I made were around 20-30 minutes when I finished them. This was normally edited from around 3-4 hours of footage+time it took to think up the thing in the first place+time trying to promote it (which I didn't do as much as I should) and it is very time consuming. I kind of gave up as though I really enjoyed it I just couldn't be bothered to spend what amounted to a part time jobs amount of time into something that was only going to be viewed a couple of times. If you are going to do it then do it because you enjoy the process, not to make money and not to get a million views. Honestly it is pretty heartbreaking to spend a ton of time creating something only to be greeted with a resounding "meh"
  22. Maybe an odd question but it came up the other day when I was talking to a couple of teachers about the IT curriculum. I know technically "the internet" (used to at least) refer to the infrastructure (servers, routers, cable, etc) and "the world wide web" referred to the content supplying services run on the internet. However how many of you actually consider these to be two separate things when talking about them in day to day life? Personally I have used to two terms interchangeably and don't ever remember speaking to another tech and having them distinguish between the two. Was just curious if it was just me or if that was the common view?
  23. Who thought that naming something was a good idea to leave to the internet?
  24. I'm living in SE kent and this morning went to make a cup of tea and the water was REALLY chemically smelling/tasting. I have pretty much zero sense of smell and still noticed it.
  25. My problem seems to have been my new graphics card (R9 380 so not the nvidia driver issue). Swapped it for my old card yesterday and it didn't crash once. New card is being sent back but because it was an exdisplay/open box one they probably wont have a replacement so will need to find another card for around £120-150 ish.
